Question

Come on Palmer, freak us!

So,

it's been over a year now since we got a glimpse at what VR might bring us through our beloved Development Kit. We've been kept busy with a steady stream of tiny bits of information regarding what OculusVR is up to behind closed doors. However, when it comes to solid facts on the current state of development, official statements on current or future specs or tasty new images out of the development process and the latest HMD-creations there's hardly anything new brought to us backers, developers and straight enthusiasts.

What I'm kindly asking you, Palmer, is wouldn't it be about time to pull down those panties and show us what you got in store right now? Maybe as a little Christmas present to the community? :D

Kind regards,
David

Slamming the car off the guardrails is more than half the fun.
Intelligence... is not inherent - it is a point in understanding. Q: When does a fire become self sustaining?

    This.

So let's hope we do see some X-mas present from Palmer & Co. beside the news on fresh cash input from Mr. Andreessen.

I'd love to see a cool video in the style of their kickstarter's video where they show some of their doings, testings and milestones, short interviews of the devs, funny happenings in the office/lab, maybe staff members as VR-Santa's wearing the latest prototype, preparations for CES 2014, or, or, or... :D

It was your brilliance kbk about the idea about heroes and the oculus marketing strategy. Through palmer and constant marketing of him they sell hope. This floor-pi quoted above guy likes that hope and so do millions more. The underdog in his garage beat out all kinds of other forces and people. It inspires the masses. Every time iribe is celebrated and not palmer it hurts that marketing effort. I realize geek says some people don't want to be herores,
But what is best for the broader public? CEO iribe take this as advice from a guy that used to talk to CEO gerstner at IBM. Marketing was 70% of IBM's budget. He told us The entire pc division was run at a loss when I was there just for marketing purposes while the real money was made in the mainframe side and related services. Later China took over that dead dog. Palmer is the best marketing you have in the world iribe for so many humans, don't be silly and not use it every time you can iribe. As kbk has said. As I say. As floor-pi just said at red dit iribe. They want to hear the story of hope that palmer gives. a used car salesman's son changing the planet in his garage. They don't care to hear about you iribe. Think hunger games ceo iribe. What is best for your company iribe and for the broader society? Hope iribe - pass it on through palmer, many people won't take it any other way iribe. What do u think kbk? Is it more inspiring to the youth out there hearing about iribe or palmer? Which one is the better sell for the company? Even here white just wants to hear palmer stuff. Pay attention iribe. - let it go iribe. I am going to watch that Kurt Russell movie used cars - all u need to know about marketing. Lol!

I am wondering I guess while all the hate for people who are doing a pretty good job trying to bring VR into the forefront after all these years? Okay someone had some earlier encouragement and even some suggestions? Great then be happy VR is finally making headway. Wish this particular group was implemented VR the way you envisioned? Honestly, tough. There are plenty of people with ideas. The world is full of people with ideas, even great ones. A smaller amount of those with ideas tinker and produce something. Some of the tinkerers who produce something keep working until they have something viable for the rest of us. A few of the viable ones produce something at the right moment and change the world. Maybe you had a great idea. That's awesome, seriously. The world needs ideas, creativity is the first step. But it is only the first step. If you have a different vision then implement it. Prove that your idea is better by making that idea into something. Words are easy, tangible accomplishments hard.

I don't think standing around saying at every opportunity you were the 5th Beatle and John is losing his artistic integrity because he is supporting Paul who is selling out the group to crass commercialism just looks like sour grapes to the average observer. I'd rather be a cheerleader and enjoy the ride as VR finally comes to fruition. I don't think anyone at Oculus is sitting around claiming they invented VR and that there is no room now for anyone else in the field. So the world is still safe for VR Truth, Justice and the Open Source way. If others have a great VR idea that they want to tinker up into a product to promote, great. Just look at how many such products there are now. If anything, Oculus has helped make it possible for these ideas to get some recognition. Just three short years ago VR itself was synonymous with over-hype and failure.

Do you think the Omni or Sixense Kickstarters would have succeeded if there was no Oculus rift? And what if you have an idea that wants to go in a different direction for the HMD? Well Oculus sure didn't hurt castAR which easily got its Kickstarter off the ground and Palmer himself contributed to that even though they are technically a competitor to Oculus. I think all evidence points to a viable VR community that has only grown stronger with Oculus in it for nearly all involved. As they say, it is a free country, so keep telling us how the Beetles could have been better, if only....

    Sincerely,

While wild speculation and conspiracy theories are not exactly against the rules, I don't like where this topic is going. For now I am just moving it to the Lounge, but if I continue to see baseless accusations against Oculus employees, then I will close the thread. Thanks guys.

Tldr. current socioeconomic systems are killing us all and delaying vr revolution. I can't do the things you say calanar kbk can't Palmer can't because of limits and tyranny that don't have to be there if we tear them down.

Calanar hate? I am here trying to help as I know for the most part we all are. I dont have a different vision then the one already shared w palmer years ago and am excited for his future and progress and for us all. I promise to respect your views and ideas and not do a hit n run driveby if you do to.The quoted text from floor-pi above over from red dit makes a point. I try to tie that into marketing memes kbk suggested in a good post at mtbs3d. What do you think about floor-pi s points? I am ecstatic you brought up the Beatles however, because my crack head girlfriend loves them and I recently learned something new about them and abrash allowed me to link on his blog to that set of memes for some posts I made over at oculusrift.com forums.http://oculusrift.com/post6040.html#p6040. I was tomorrow man over there. I think it is a travesty that the producer of the Beatles and friend of john Lennon decades later is still hurting jadorowsky with money, lawyers, hate. Etc etc. abrash said on his blog about the free sharing of info and egos and how it hurts this planet. He is right. I try to approach this from all the people saying patents capitalist property rights ecocmic systems etc etc are doing more harm than good. You must concede there is a lot of damage being done in some ways. (Like me not being able to see some of jadorowskys stuff even though he the original artist wants me too, but the hate filled Beatles producer dies not). Its up to all of us to reform our society if we want to. Carmack was pissed because "orphans of Apollo" guy type evil gets played out on him and other aerospace geniuses. ( and that is very serious because maybe we all die from no astrtoid defense he didnt build) Palmer and crew maybe slave to Samsung oLED tyranny. Some people maybe think competition of Samsung palmer Jeri etc the best way forward for the masses. Maybe in a free open source world where they all worked together with different patents economic s etc better progress for all of humanity. U can't be certain where where things would be right now if Neil had booted me before I engaged palmer given butterfly effects. Ndas caused that negative karma from my perspective.

I did not want to respect the novel, I wanted to recreate it. For me Dune did not belong to Herbert as Don Quixote did not belong to Cervantes, nor Edipo with Esquilo.

There is an artist, only one in the medium of a million other artists, which only once in his life, by a species of divine grace, receives an immortal topic, a MYTH... I say "receives" and not "creates" because the works of art its received in a state of mediumnity directly of the unconscious collective. Work exceeds the artist and to some extent, it kills it because humanity, by receiving the impact of the Myth, has a major need to erase the individual who received it and transmitted: its individual personality obstructs, stains the purity of the message which, of its base, requires to be anonymous... We know whom created the cathedral of Notre-Dame, neither the Aztec solar calendar, neither the tarot of Marseilles, nor the myth of Don Juan, etc.

One feels that Cervantes gave HIS version of Quixote - of course incomplete - and that we carry in the heart the total character... Christ belongs not to Mark, neither to Luke, neither to Matthew, nor to John... There are many other Gospels known as apocryphal books and there is as many lifes of Christ as there are believers. Each one of us has their own version of Dune, its Jessica, their Paul... I felt in enthusiastic admiration towards Herbert and at the same time in conflict (I think that the same thing occurred to him)... He obstructed me... I did not want him as a technical adviser ... I did everything to move him away from the project... I had received a version of Dune and I wanted to transmit it: the Myth was to give up the literary form and to become Image...

I only post because I respect. If I don't I step away. And while there may need to be some rethinking about unbridled capitalism, all systems have their down sides. And to the last, "I can't do" and "KBK can't do." No one at Oculus is holding a patent to anyone's head and saying my way or the highway. Nor have they pulled the usual insane NDA stuff you reference. We (including me) have dev kits in our hands. I didn't sign an NDA for it. I dispute that you can't do something because of tyranny. With respect, that is a naked assertion. Who is keeping you from doing anything?

Michael u didn't address anything of floor pis points but as u wish. To a certain segment of people iribe is just the guy to woo or destroy that Samsung stranglehold. In one perspective he did battle w the apple QuickTime video codec creator and beat his on live company. So in that light of corporate warfare iribe is one of America's greatest heroes to fight a foreign force. With lonsdale and his "possible" palantir ties we have US control of vr futures instead of Chinese dominance so another win for team USA. However to me personally maybe I want to "hack" a device like my hero palmer. Until that recent wired article palmer and iribe didnt tell me they were using a galaxy oled screen. I still don't know what display driver electronics they are using so if I want to do something like lasers mipi interface thread at mtbs3d I am totally in the dark. Instead of going through oculus maybe I just "steal" a Samsung phone screen and do my own hacking, but oculus ain't sharing so I am being hindered. In an open source world this secrecy would not hinder me or any of you and palmer could tell us all everything but he can't the way things are now.
