Question

Far Cry 5

Anybody been playing it - what are your thoughts? I don't want to really discuss the "political" aspects of this game because they are superficial at best and honestly not really worth discussing.

I am about 8 hours in (I had all of yesterday off, woohoo!!!) - I am not going to put any spoilers in this thread. But hot damn - I haven't really enjoyed a Far Cry game since the first one - but FC5 is just brilliant.

I have read the reviews - and yes there are problems with the gameplay in as far as there are lots of systems interacting with each other all the time. It is a game where you don't really have a moments rest - and the story / narrative isn't as deep as it possibly could be. It is closer to the farcical GTA series than it is to anything more serious - which is a bit of a shame because the setting is very well realized and interesting to explore, but it doesn't feel dangerous or creepy very often and I think that is a missed mark.

However it is just extremely fun to play. Before it was released I was picked up Far Cry 3 where I last left off (Vaas kicking me into a hole with a cement block tied around my feet). I played it for about two hours - and just became bored with it. I was worried that my pre-order of Far Cry 5 would end up being a mistake purchase that I'd want to refund before long. But it is not - the gameplay mechanics, environment and mission design are all superb and it is sustaining my interest completely.

So far I am about 75% done John Seed's area - and am planning on completing it 100% before moving on to the next area.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on forums?

I know it is just so much fun - I have 9 more missions to complete in John Seed's area, then I am moving to Faith's. So I am almost a 3rd of the way through. Honestly one of these areas could almost qualify as a complete game - considering I have almost 10 hours of gameplay time in according to uplay.

I did John Seed 100% before moving to Faith. My OCD compels me.

@LZoltowski - GTAV was very good too, albeit a little too on rails vs the FC games. But Trevor just takes the cake - most entertaining character in a video game EVER.

Finished it, in keeping with FC4, there are 3 endings. The two normal endings come at the end of the game and there is a hidden ending reached at the very beginning of the game. To get it, instead of trying to arrest the dude at the church, just stand there long enough and your team will simply walk away. Of the 3 endings, this is arguably the "good" one. Same could be said for FC4 too I suppose.

Overall, the story is interesting. It's filled with plot holes and the magical boss deaths along the way are never explained away. But the overall result is excellent.

@BeastyBaiter - how many hours did you put into it, and what was your completion rates?

About 20 hours, I didn't check completion stats and have since started a new play through. I didn't stick around in any regions after doing the boss fight in each though. So I'm guessing well under 50% completion for each. I did liberate most of the outposts though (think I got them all). But that was the main driver for the story on my play through. I did precious few resistance missions, maybe 2-3 from each region.

Just finished the game and will offer a word of warning. Once you engage the final battle there is no going back after the credits roll. No new game plus option either. So make sure you finish up before you initiate the last battle.

Pretty annoying really even if it does make sense with the story. They could have at least put the last checkpoint save back further though.

    I just started playing.
Throwing shovels at people is fun.

It feels wrong to be sneaking through the woods without a Vintar BC though. I've been playing Stalker Call of Chernobyl for the last two weeks (mod that merges together Stalker Shadow Of Chernobyl, Stalker Clear Sky and Stalker Call Of Pripyat into a single massive open world game), in comparison Farcry 5 is a bit simplistic.

Does anybody remember the game Boiling Point from 2005? Early Farcry 2-5 style gameplay set in colombia (changed in the atari release to a fake country name). Sadly it was a buggy mess.
For that matter, anybody remember Farcry 1? Mutant monkeys, cloaking devices, surgically attached rocket launchers.

I do remember Boiling Point - the fake country name was Realia or something, just awful.
The 2.0 patch made it playable. It was the first game of it's type - an open-world RPG set in a modern day country. I don't believe I ever beat it - I made it pretty far though, but the game was just bugged and kind of boring once I got over how big the game world was. Stalker came out a year later to somewhat better results - and then Far Cry 2 in 2008 to what for me was the first high production open-world first person shooter.

I loved Far Cry 1 - the Crysis series is the logical evolution of that series. It is surprisingly still a fun if unforgiving game today and with a few mods and reshade it can look very nice.

The Far Cry series tends to be more geared towards the action genre - and as such they are very simple games to the extent that they really empower the player. I mean I am just playing on normal difficulty - but there is no stamina meter. I have 90% of the first area completed on-foot rarely driving and only flying once I started the missions where I unlocked that.

It is funny because I think the world that they built would feel a lot larger and to scale if movement was reduced and stamina was introduced not only for the player but for the NPCs. If proper survival mechanics were introduced - sleeping, eating, limb-based damage and healing system, weather elements, etc. - the world could very quickly become an unforgiving very large enemy itself to tackle, and then lessening the encounters a fair amount so that each hostage situation you came across mattered especially if the rate of NPC information was lessened it would make the gamble worthwhile to stop and help the resistance.

There are moments when the systems are silent and there is not a lot of background noise - maybe some shots very far off in the distance while you walk along the bank of river or maybe up towards someones house. Then you see a couple of thugs leaning over a prisoner and the setting really kicks in. But the severity of the situation quickly diminishes as you run up and chain attack the two bad guys with your baseball bat and shoot the guy who runs towards you caught off guard.

I mean the action is great - and it really controls unbelievably well. It is a great open-world first person shooter - but the potential for it to have been a great open world immersive sim is hard to get past. The way the world open ups to the player - the way missions are relayed, how you can get around without relying on the map very much, the emergent gameplay elements found in the tactical approaches to each conflict all speak very much to an immersive sim. All they needed to take it a step further was implement a slower more laboured pace to the gameplay - I think the scenario that is there would have much more impact with a more realistic environment.

I also would have set it in the late 60s or 70s - to get around the all the issues with communications, etc. I mean there is no way that what is happening in the game would not be on CNN with in hours of the county turning into a full scale war zone.

I am in no ways torn about the quality of the game - it is great, an easy recommendation. But as someone who has been gaming for over 20 years and been following open-world games and immersive sims fervently - I do feel that there is a missed opportunity for what could have been one of the best survival shooters ever made. I hope they open the game up to true modding for the single-player because I'd love to see the game reworked to be more unforgiving and realistic - I think that all the missions I have played so far would all translate fairly well if rebalanced alongside the main mechanics and outside of some of the more arcadey style missions (Clutch Nixon) are already tonally balanced this way. In fact I think that's why I've noticed it so much in this game - the narrative feels much darker than the main gameplay which is still rooted in the big action-hero movie scenarios that made FC3 successful leading to a slight imbalance or disconnect between the two.

tl;dr  Boiling Point was the first, Far Cry 1 was awesome, Far Cry 5
feels like it should be an immersive sim instead of an action game,
hopefully they allow for proper modding at some point outside the
Arcade. Also I am in no way re-reading over the above, so if there are grammar mistakes, incoherent passages, etc. - read the tl;dr
