Question

Far Cry 5

Anybody been playing it - what are your thoughts? I don't want to really discuss the "political" aspects of this game because they are superficial at best and honestly not really worth discussing.

I am about 8 hours in (I had all of yesterday off, woohoo!!!) - I am not going to put any spoilers in this thread. But hot damn - I haven't really enjoyed a Far Cry game since the first one - but FC5 is just brilliant.

I have read the reviews - and yes there are problems with the gameplay in as far as there are lots of systems interacting with each other all the time. It is a game where you don't really have a moments rest - and the story / narrative isn't as deep as it possibly could be. It is closer to the farcical GTA series than it is to anything more serious - which is a bit of a shame because the setting is very well realized and interesting to explore, but it doesn't feel dangerous or creepy very often and I think that is a missed mark.

However it is just extremely fun to play. Before it was released I was picked up Far Cry 3 where I last left off (Vaas kicking me into a hole with a cement block tied around my feet). I played it for about two hours - and just became bored with it. I was worried that my pre-order of Far Cry 5 would end up being a mistake purchase that I'd want to refund before long. But it is not - the gameplay mechanics, environment and mission design are all superb and it is sustaining my interest completely.

So far I am about 75% done John Seed's area - and am planning on completing it 100% before moving on to the next area.

It's pretty good so far, but being constantly under attack is pissing me

Not sure what political aspects there are, It's batshit crazy religious preppers vs standard preppers.

And the not having a moment's rest is the worst part so far.  It's like you've got a nice big uhohbadguystofight world to uhohmorebadguys explore and things to morebadguys do like fish oopsgotshotwhilefishing and hunt oopsstrafedbyaplanewhilehunting....

I do think it's funny that John Seed has my name tattood on his hand.

Heh, lessons of the FC5 story, let's see:
    1) If you go try to arrest a cult leader with thousands of heavily armed followers on his own private island, bring more than 5 people.

    2) That crazy guy shouting "the end is nigh" is crazy, unless you try to stop him, in which case he's right. I call it Schrodinger's Apocalypse.

    3) People should not have guns because they are dangerous and bad people do bad things with them, which is why everyone should have tons of guns.

    4) IED's are fun for the whole family!

    5) There isn't a single child in the state of Montana, but there are pregnant women. I suspect cannibalism. Baby humans are super delicious!

    6) Leaving your stuff in a constantly flooded storm drain for safe keeping won't result in anything bad happening to those items. It's also a great place to keep your mattress, it won't even get wet!

So yeah, don't read too much into it. It's a fun story but if you try to extract deeper meaning or politics from it, you'll just hurt your head. It simply isn't there.

A sniper tried to shoot me (from a fair distance away). But he did it in the middle of a fight between 2 bulls, a bear and a cougar. He didn't last long.

I don't like the way all bodies vanish as soon as you clear an outpost. I wanted to loot them.

I shot 10+ rounds from a rifle into the face of a dog at around 2m range, it still leaped at me.

The damn cougars have been into the catnip, their AI freaks out while attacking, sending them spinning in circles.

The companion dog won't get in a boat or car.

I've spent 99.9% of the time on foot. Vehicles seem useless.

    Yeah, that's kind of annoying.

Nah, they move WAY faster, and they have guns and rockets.

Also they seem to be very good for running over your own dog, see first complaint above.

FAR from useless. I cleared an entire outpost from my helicopter.

The trucks with turret guns are useful as well...  just make sure you don't have a NPC manning the gun as you pass a fuel truck with a peggie driving it. Fucking retard a.i...

What pisses me off more is when I'm flying along in my helicopter...Oh, that guy down there needs help, let me kill the peggies.  Oops, guy needs revived I'll just land and revive him.

Hey dude, you'll be ok now.

    Wait, where are you...

Any of you guys found Bigfoot yet?
    April 1, 2018
No Bigfoot yet - just started Faith's area and found a house with a map of big foot sightings.

The gameplay loop has become comfortable. If I stick to the forest and run between objectives I see a few smaller skirmishes or animals and I don't drag enemies with me to each location. For the outposts I take out one alarm silently then run to the next one and shoot it and then take out the enemies.

I read a review early on about not being able to have enough cash to purchase stuff because of ammo drops and such. I am playing on normal - have purchased 3 prestige guns and 3 prestige melee items, as well as multiple outfits and maps, etc. I always have like 15grand on me. It is so easy to make money in this game hunting or fishing. Plus ammo dumps are so regular in the outposts, etc. that I really only fill my ammo if I am going on a story mission.

I still think that this game would benefit from a more realistic mode - no fast travel, eat and sleep to survive, stamina meter, weather elements affect stamina, anti venom for snake bites, animal attacks quicker and more deadly, limb based health system, etc. etc. etc.

There is a good chance that once I beat this game I will likely not play it again - partly because I am trying to 100% each area, so there will be little new content left and I haven't purchased the DLC because I am waiting to see how good it is going to be. But if they made a proper balanced survival mode in this game - the mission content is good enough that it would warrant a second play.

I just gotta vent a bit about the chopper lady companion. That dumb broad CANNOT fly a helicopter. If I get into it to make her fly to a way point, I'm in for the most pathetic grandma ride ever, and she cannot land the damn thing! At one point I was sitting there watching her ALMOST touch down for the THIRD TIME, and then start ascending again because a tree was close or whatever..   FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WOMAN! I lost it and blasted her with my small shotty..  she fell out the door and I crashed.

I thought, well, fuck it, I have my new shiny air drop fast travel perk - I'll make do without her. I swear to god, just as I pulled the cord on my parachute the old hag comes flying in and chops me up in mid air! omfg...
