Hey Forum,I kind of want to chase tornadoes :) but most importantly I really want to solve the mystery of it. well actually its more like I am fascinated by vortex dynamics in general.anyways by happen chance...I have revisited the subject of tornado research and have been pursuing this interest in great detail all day today. and also by happen chance I have a new hypothesis to add to my current hypothesis....I agree (for the most part) with the general theory of how classical tornado's are formed. However what boggles my mind is that we still don't fully understand why a particular super cell will spawn massive devastatingly powerful tornadoes but another super cell with similar or nearly identical conditions only spawns a bunch of weak tornadoes....At first I was thinking "Thermodynamic". which is why (several months ago) I was very interested to see thermal images (or near infrared images) of tornadic activity. Tornado researchers have just recently started to attempt to catch therm
Hey guys, I'm posting this in the OT forum because I feel bad asking it at all. Have there been no updates whatsoever on how things are coming along with DK2 since the initial announcement? I've been looking all over the forums and the rest of the website and it seems like not a peep has been uttered. I hope this means things are running on schedule, I think I remember them saying late July when I ordered mine on the first day they made it available. Thanks for any information.
So, I had to toss out my chair today, which I've had for many years. It was just getting too worn down; which leaves me sitting on wood and aluminum piece of crap. So 'tis the time I start looking for a chair.I would love to get the Emperor chair:But alas, it is way the hades out of my budget atm. Perhaps once OVR v3 is released, and I sell off my FaceBook stock, but for now, I'm thinking about the Realspace Pro mesh chair from Office Depot. However, that !@#$ thing is $400. For that kind of money, I could get a damn beanbag and a DK2... Just saying. So, what is the collective thoughts from the OVR community? What do you guys sit in for days, even months, on end without getting up?
I finally got fed up with not being able to click the fullscreen button on embedded Youtube vids on this forum so I wrote a tiny little Greasemonkey script to re-enable it. Since userscripts.org is dead I'll just copy paste the whopping two lines of code here for those who want it.// ==UserScript==// @name OculusDevForums - Enable fullscreen youtube// @namespace oculus// @include https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php*// @require http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.9.0.min.js// @version 1// @grant none// ==/UserScript==$("object[data^='https://www.youtube']").each(function (){ $(this).append("<param name='allowFullScreen' value='true'>");})
Soon, the Rift will make all other forms of entertainment obsolete. In time, we will forget that there even was an upper half to people's faces.Until then, we are forced to grub what morsels of entertainment we may from the gutter of the internet. In an attempt to make this interstitial period in the transit lounge of existence less closely resemble purgatory, I have devised a game to occupy the void: Clamber.Available now on the Play Store, Clamber is so 2D it physically hurts. It is, however, a finely-tuned test of your dexterity, quick-thinking and command of coarse language. You may find yourself in a zen-like state of calm, deliberate flow - although testing indicates that frantic scrabbling at the screen accompanied by a rising yell of "aaaaAAAAARGHBASTARD!" is considerably more likely. It is free to play, as distinct from free-to-play, in that there are no lives or energy systems. The small number of hopelessly generous in-app purchases are entirely cosmetic. Indeed, as this is n
I'm angry with the NSA so I spent about 60 seconds thinking about how to screw their s**t up. Came up with a concept for full-body VR haptics suits and quick-apply latex-like face masks. These would let you look and act like your avatar IRL. The haptic suit has a selection of programs casually stimulate your muscles to improve your fitness and move in an attractive way, while also making your gait conform to the gait of everybody else with a similar suit and program. This prevents profiling from gait. The concept includes a make-up device like the one from the movie 5th Element, but it applies a face mask that makes you look like your avatar. This combination is very marketable while also preventing mass-profiling and surveillance. If you hate em', spread the idea.
My DK1 case needed replacement latches, so I designed a 3d printable one that you can download from here:https://www.youmagine.com/designs/latch-for-oculus-rift-dk1-caseIf you don't have access to a 3d printer and can't find a local hackerspace or makerspace to print them for you (it's a <10 minute job), it's on shapeways as a last resort.
Hey all,I'm a kickstarter supporter for the Virtuix Omni. Unfortunately they've just sent out a post pushing back the shipping date to Q3/Q4 this year. Unfortunately for me (in this instance), I'm selling my flat and going travelling from September onwards, so wouldn't now be able to use it.I'm wondering therefore if anyone would like to buy my order/kickstarter reward off me? I'd of course make sure that Virtuix updates their records to point to you as a new owner etc, and then it would ship directly to you (when it ships). Please PM me if you're interested.Cheers,Ian
I've had contact with Cybereality, and he said that it would be ok for me to post this request.I've been following the progress of VR since the mid-80's, and have always been excited about its' potential.Yet, I have never had the opportunity to try or work with it. I will be purchasing the consumer version of the Rift whenit comes out, but cannot afford to purchase the development kit and consumer version.I have checked the map showing local Rift owners willing to demonstrate their devices, but none are close. My question is anybody out their willing to let me borrow their Rift?I am willing to pay the shipping both ways.I am working on a graphic engine for the Rift as well, and will freely release it when it is far enough to be usable. I believe in the VR community, and wish to contribute to it openly what I can.I live in Keizer, Oregon, and program in my free time when not working.I appreciate any help provided.
Saw this on mashable. Thoughts? Would be perfect for us indie movie makers imo.http://mashable.com/2014/05/04/centr-camera/
Wasn't sure where to post this but i was just thinkingwhat if... you made a game that was like... the wizard of oz, how it starts off in black and white, but in this case, it starts off on your 2d display, and you play a while like that, till an event happens that teleports you into the 3D world, and then you put the rift on? could even be all cliche and say "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."I mean how amazing must it have been to see that transition from black and white to color when the wizard of oz first came out.
(post music, marky mark singing good vibrations) Accelerometers used to track keyboard vibrations, http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~traynor/papers/traynor-ccs11.pdfhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6456360 It's definitely far from being an easy attack. But it raises an interesting question in that the current smartphone security models don't require special permissions for accelerometer access whereas they do for cameras and other things. With this kind of stuff and other advances in activity recognition, allowing any app to record anything using the accelerometer might become a privacy threat.paulgb 4 hours ago | linkBoth Android and iPhone expose an accelerometer API even to web pages without user input, although I'm not sure what the sample rate is. replyGo Lonsdale and Palantir! Stop raven from snowcrash from hurting us all, track those keystrokes using the oculus rift HMD accelerometer (and all the rest) , now I can start selling this product to my Pentagon friends and Keith Alexand
So in preparation for the arrival of our much-anticipated RDK2 (and my 36th birthday) I have decided I can afford to spend about another 180 or so dollars upgrading my PC. The only problem is, I can't figure out what to buy! Being that this group carries with it some of the brightest and most knowledgeable people I have ever met, I would appreciate it if some of you could help me figure out where best I could apply my small amount of monies to get the most performance out of what is available to me. My current build so far is:990fx-extreme4AMD FX-8350 (8core Vishera: bought it for Maya)EVGA GTX 580 3gb 2 TB Seagate Hybrid SSHDThermaltake SMART 750w Qnix 1440p MonitorI was thinking of buying a new GPU and then selling my 580 to help recoup some of the costs as I could quite likely still get $300 for it on ebay without much trouble, but I could do the same for the processor if that would be a better choice. I'm just not sure. Any ideas?
Since 60fps is so important for a good VR experience, I figured this would be of interest for those of you creating Rift videos:Apparently there is a way to get YouTube to work with 60fps videos using the HTML5 video viewer and the 2x playback speed option. This posting at 120hz.net has the details: http://120hz.net/showthread.php?1573
Hello everyone, I'm considering using the Rift for a robotics project next year but I've never experienced one. It’s hard to understand what it’s like using one just watching videos online and I’d like to “kick the tires” before purchasing (pre-ordering) one. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to find someone or somewhere that is doing demos? I live in southern Maryland and live really close to Baltimore and Washington DC. I’ve been hoping to run across one at a conference or something but nothing has come up yet. Is there anyone around here that has one that would like to show it off? Maybe a hackerspace or something? Thanks,Aaron
Hey Forum,Just a little bit of brainstorming, conceptualization and thought experimentation....Short Term/Initial Focus: Immediate Goals; DK2 SDKDriver SupportFirmwareConfig UtilityMid-Long Term Focus: Stretch Goals; CV1VR Content Market PlaceOVR Client (Steam Clone)Gravatar for VR Leverage Facebook for Social/Multiplayer VR Content Production & Acquisition; CV1 Goal: Establish/Acquire IPs that define the VR platform.Produce 1st Party VR ContentAcquire/Purchase/Publish VR ContentClosing ThoughtsThe Short term and immediate goals are pretty self explanatory. Thus I am going to focus the majority of my attention and thought processing on the Mid-Long term goals first and foremost. Then I will shift focus and share my thoughts regarding VR Content Production & Acquisition.Elaboration coming soon....
I told you wonderful people about this before but they didn't meet their goal. So here I am again and I hope you guys are as excited as I am about this.Go to the link here and watch the video: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/levelup/sabertron-foam-swords-with-electronic-scoring
Ok .. "simple question / problem" ..NOT a laptop fan .. have to go "around" to demonstrate some OR stuff, was thinking at some "compact PCs" that look a bit like a Mac Mini or such ..What are the best options, what would you do/recommend ?Something portable yet with "considerable graphic power".Thanks in advance for any suggestion :) Ah .. possibly NOT a Mac something, we are talking Windows here.
...well, 1.6 % of it.http://whoownsfacebook.com/--> there you can also find all others who are owning OculusVR after the FB deal.meet the family...AD
Hey Forum,Now that I have done some research and seen what VR is capable of and where the medium is going.... I really *really* want to make a VR game now. And the initial idea that I am brainstorming is titled "Maiden Voyage" or just "Titanic"Imagine if you will, being let loose to explore the titanic minutes before it hits the iceberg on its maiden voyage....Elements of Gameplay:Exploration: just building and exploring the titanic alone in VR would be an amazing experience in and of itself.Interactivity: imagine all of the interactive elements you could design into this Job/Social Sim: optional (will explain in further detail below)Survival: the core goal (will explain further)The top two elements are pretty self explanatory....Job/Social Sim:you will be interacting with the virtual experience from the perspective of a character . each character will have a whole plethora of unique exclusive scenarios. you will board the titanic in a stationary like fashion (think asunder earthbond)
Just saw this go up recently. It is designed for use in motion graphics / cinema, but from listening to the samples, there are a few hundred areas in which I could definitely use in game design as well.https://www.videocopilot.net/products/motionpulse/A couple other ones (which I have and use):Designer Sound Effects: https://www.videocopilot.net/products/dsfx/Pro Scores: https://www.videocopilot.net/products/proscores/Figured there might be some interest to the audiophiles here :)
While this may not have anything to do with VR (hence my posting it in the off topic area), it does have something to do with technology.http://www.rockethub.com/42228Basically, the probe got launched, then did a bunch of science for NASA. Then... someone threw out all of the equipment for communicating with it. Now, it's finally coming back into earth's sphere of influence. It's going to get damn close to the moon. These guys want to turn it back on and have it burn to be caught in orbit. They're around 25 or 26 thousand away from their funding goal, with 10 days to go, last I checked.I figured that there might be a few around here that would be able to help them out a bit more than I could. No money, but I can at least spread word about 'em, I figure. It would be a pity for this bit of space history to zip away from us.
Hi People and fellow RiftersI got into a discussion on another forum a little while back, I'm curious to know what peoples views are on VR in general being an alternative escapism instead of drugs? On the other forum I won't mention which one, but when I aired my views on this matter there was at first a really positive vibe! Which got highly up-voted then for some reason really down-voted? The thing is I honeslty believe that VR could actually offer the escapism a lot of people seek where in other positions they could potentially turn to drugs for the escapism that they're looking for! I think VR is powerful enough to offer this other medium, it's something that maybe just a screen can't offer (full immersion) personally I don't take drugs but I've had a colourful past! And I've definitely lived! So I hope that answers members curiosities? Would just like to know if people share the same view as in VR is as powerful as I believe it is going to be? I'm in no way saying it could cure t
Hey forum,I am extremely interested in capturing and recreating the essence of large scale light shows in VR using computer graphics on a much smaller scale. Initial focus would be to gradually increase the complexity of the light show itself more so then the scale. can any game engine handle this many lights, and this many virtual screens, all working together with the audio of the performance in real time? doesn't have to be "live" it can be entirely pre-fabricated and just presented live....who is with me on this?
They have dug up an evil place. We're all doomed. Doomed!http://www.cnet.com/news/found-ataris-e-t-games-dug-up-from-new-mexico-landfill/Now, who is going to be the guy to adapt it to VR. We currently have a nice hole in the ground in NM for you. :) lol
