Question

More annoying than God Rays

It's the hottest day of the year in the UK and I've now counted 10 thunder flies walking around in my monitor... especially annoying on the white backgrounds which means most of the forum... I may have to avoid the forum until Autumn

best way to reduce this problem anyone???

I think they trusted me a bit more since I had IT background so I knew all the security precautions etc and it was a mutual respect. But it was a great day for me ... it was like finally getting your level 70 sword of might and going into that area that nobody dares to touch! :)

we got so frustrated with our IT department's unwillingness to install the software we needed on the server (oh no it needs more testing.. more testing!!!)....  that we ended up buying a stand-alone PC from petty cash just to have all the programs we needed without having to deal with them

Not taking sides but from a sysadmin pov better safe than sorry, problem with purchasing your own is the IT department may refuse to support it when you down. The last company I worked for had quite a few issues like that impatient departments would buy non standard hardware and software and then look to us to support it.  We always had to thoroughly test software for weakness and if there was code in it that would call home to send or receive info especially loaded on a server.

I think we underestimated what our IT department had to do every time new software gets installed... the network must have had about 10,000 PC's on it, including stuff that was running London Underground.

and I can't imagine how many security risks we would have introduced if we plugged our stand-alone into the network with all of it's constant thumb-drive comings and goings

oh yeah, that was the agreement... IT would have nothing to do with it and we couldn't under any circumstances plug it into the network!

Hahahaha ,,,, yeah ... once I worked my way up the corporate ladder to Board Level in a company, I requested my own domain Admin account .... they were like no .. I was like yes ... then just ran my own shit :)

Sometimes its better to give a local admin account over a domain admin account. Too much power as a domain admin and not saying you would do anything to hurt the company but an accidental policy change or changing ownership on a folder and accidentally locking everyone out. A company I was at one of the DA's made a permission change on what he thought was a shared folder and ended up disjoining over 400 workstations from the domain and it required paying a Microsoft tech to come on site to figure out what he did. So yeah just because you want a DA scares the shit out of us sysadmins!
