Valve sent him a free Index due to several reasons - I do enjoy his videos, haven't watched this all to the end yet, though - this is his take on the Index after 13 months of use:

Oculus Rift CV1, Valve Index & PSVR2, Asus Strix OC RTX™ 3090, i9-10900K (5.3Ghz), 32GB 3200MHz, 16TB SSD "Ask not what VR can do for you, but what you can do for VR"

Index sounds about as hard to get as a 3080 GPU.

Agreed. I also agree that it is likely for the exact same reasons (e.g. NOT because of high sales numbers).

"NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 supply is scarce even in the Chinese market. Not only that, but the numbers show that fake reviews are being put in place to suggest that there's no supply issue while the actual number of buyer reviews is far smaller than the ones being reported.

It is reported that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 AIB graphics cards have hit 114,410 units sold while in reality, JD (largest Chinese retailer) only managed to fulfill 743 orders which are just 0.65% of the total reviews & sales reported by the retailer. To submit a buyer review, JD.com requires you to show an actual invoice of the product purchased, a picture or video of the product, and a comment regarding the product. But it looks like either JD.com or AIBs are now virtually inflating the sales numbers and product reviews to show that the card is out of stock due to heavy demand when that's certainly not the case here".

^^Yeah, i think until the entire world has been vaccinated we won't see stuff ramp back up to normal production levels, but my CV1 is still going and will hopefully last until then, bit if that fails my fallback with be back to the OVive, and if that were to fail i would just dig out the Dell VR Visor, and if that were to go belly up i would grab the PSVR, and if that were to fail then i would be a hollowed out husk of a human being left to wander the rotting wastelands that is normal 2d gaming on a tv/monitor. (Shudders)....god help us all. lol

Might get that PSVR2 - my best bet would be that Sony VR2 matches the Index res, has finger tracking, supports 120 Hz, is lcd - and has great sound. Tracking will probably be inside-out though. But let's see how the RTX 3090 works with Index first, not really fond of having many hmds, but 2 work like a charm 🙂

The interesting thing about the PSVRII is that it is supposed to be going the inside out tracking method via one cable, so it might even be able to connect to the PC and used as a PCVR, as the original PSVR can do, but this time with 6DOF instead of 3DOF, and of course vr controllers, and if they stick with the Oled panel then it might end up being quite a good hybred console/PC hmd.  🙂

As a side note,

I have spoken with Techy111 , as he reached out to me due to a few concerning reports. There is an agreement that as long as I continue to remain on-topic and avoid any personal nonsense, that my contributions to this discussion are certainly acceptable.

We've spoken and reviewed the commentary, and I certainly feel welcome to contribute (on-topic) by the OP of this thread.

Constructive discourse can be quite beneficial. Listening to each others opposing point-of-views and addressing them in a respectful manner is precisely the point of community discourse.

I consider myself a VR Enthusiast not just as a consumer, and not just for gaming and entertainment, but also as a Developer for VR experiences throughout the full spectrum of the platform and industry (education, military, workplace, etc). I have experience with developing for VR and I would certainly want any applications I publish to be utilized by Index users.

Yet as a developer, I must also understand the pros and cons of each Tracking System. And every tracking system has pros and cons, including Lighthouse. These pros and cons result in specific lines of code that determine how various VR software is built.

Discussing the pros and cons should in no way be treated as a negative thing.

Cheers!

This looks like a true copy of OmegaM4N's post - did you mean to add anything - or am I missing a point here?

A few months ago, a reddit user named, numberofthingz, reported that they have happily moved away from the Index in favor of the Quest 2 + RTX 3090.

Note that they confirm some of things I've mentioned, that while certain things "sound good on paper," it doesn't always play out that way in practice.

Valve Index. And this is better quality.

Keep in mind most people don't know what they're doing.

I worked in IT for 20 years and I'm a network security admin and cryptocurrency expert. I know what I'm doing and what to look for.

I'm not making **bleep** up either. The quality is far above and beyond my Valve Index, I dont even miss the 144hz.

From the same thread:
QC on any quest headset I got was trash, returned them somce both had poorly manufactured lenses.

Facebook needs to be held accountable for this lens issue! Did they offer to replace your unit or anything?

This is my reason why it is so hard to be able to judge how serious I should take comments on Quest 2 VD quality.

On one hand I directly believe it is significantly better on Q1. On the other hand, sure people tell it is great, but people also tell that 72Hz with standard Oculus Link Quest1 settings is perfect without any compression artifacts. Which I seriously doubt. Hell, what is the previous headset you are comparing it to?

Moral of the story - one can find about anything on the internet.

Bottom Line: Index is a great headset, Quest 2 is a great headset. We are fortunate to have them both.

What you found is what is referred to as, "an exception to the rule."

My post was in response to false claims that Quest 2 doesn't work with the 3090 in contrast to the Index.

Also, my post involves remaining on-topic as it addresses the Index directly. Your response only discusses some rare problems with Quest 2, yet your post mentions nothing about the Index.

I would prefer to remain on topic. Thanks.

To help (re)emphasize the industry-based fact that Inside-Out tracking (when done properly) is superior to Lighthouse tracking, it seems that Valve is already working on this very thing.

An article was released last month citing Valve's recent patent that includes Inside-Out Tracking. Valve submitted the Inside-Out tracking patent in February 2021.

This not only reinforces why multiple VR outlets rank Quest 2 above index, but also confirms why other Index users (such as the reddit poster I linked to), have confirmed that Quest 2 with the new 3090 is far superior to their Index experience. Note that this Index user decided to scrap their Index instead of using it with the 3090, as the Quest 2 provides a much better VR experience.

It would seem that Valve recognizes this as well, and I applaud them for working on shifting away from the now archaic "stationary tethered" approach to VR. Hopefully this will help Index move out of the small niche of VR gaming sub-genres.

For the time being I no longer read Zenbane's posts, but there seem to quite many of them lately - and reading other persons responses, it may be relevant to repeat the first rule of this forum:

Personally I'll do my best to conform to this rule, and hope that goes for other forum members too - even when discussions about the best hmd or optimal tracking get heated. Btw, trolling is also not allowed in this forum - that's rule number 4.

That's a good forum rule to observe RuneSR2 - and I find that it is best for everyone to apply that "inwards" as opposed to "outwards" to other members. Rune, I disagree with your accusations, and if I were so inclined I could make a strong case that you have spent a lot of time breaking Rules 1 and 4. However, I have no desire to prove that case (especially since I'm quite certain many are well aware).

I do feel as if you are not only going off-topic, but also personally attacking me simply because I posted factual information about Valve's latest patent. I highly recommend that you focus more on adhering to the rules yourself.

Please stay on topic and refrain from any further personal attacks. Thanks.

Hearsay evidence including selected links/reviews are hardly factual and repeating these is kinda trollish and OT.  Real world experience, albeit sometimes subjective, is much more useful imho.  Maybe time to move on since this thread is just about destroyed thanks to this imho.

I am currently enjoying Skyrim with the Index.  What with the bigger FOV, higher Res and surprisingly good visuals even on a LED display. Amazing really for a port. I never manage to finish this game, normally I break it with a mod then give up for about 4 months before a new mod tempts me back in.

I have enjoyed Skyrim VR too with the Index, but never got around to modding it - this does look nice though - full body tracking with the Index:

Yes I have that mod and the reason I downloaded it again. Makes a big difference to immersion.

I am hoping the next Skyrim has native VR support out of the box.
