Hmm so the General Forum will only be about Oculus headsets.

With all due respect - if the predominance of the postings in General are non Oculus headset related postings, there might be other things going on... Or else most of the Oculus headset related postings are being done in the appropriate Oculus headset categories and this is the result of that.

I know oftentimes I check the General forum after being away for several hours and there are hardly any updated threads. So perhaps there are more Oculus related postings being done in the other categories related to them so it seems like the other headset postings in General are overwhelming the others.

The only reason I chose the Index thread to express my frustration with my Vive Pro 2 was I was not sure if it would be well accepted me starting a Vive thread plus the VIve Pro 2 does share the same Lighthouse Tracking of the Index.  And as it turned out both Vive and Oculus are struggling some with Windows 11 which was interesting.

But hey I do appreciate Oculus allowing these other headset discussions to take place on their forums. VR is still very much a small niche and I view that as a good thing for the industry overall. If Oculus determines another forum should be created for that great, at least they still allow it.

I love VR and I love all kinds of VR headsets. In fact I really have too darn many as it is. I need help. I'm a VR addict it would seem.

In case someone needs it - the tether (Index cable) is back in stock, it has been unavailable for some time:

The hmd alone and base stations continue to be close to impossible to find.

I still have my spare cable boxed and unopened, how much are these going on ebay for these days?

VR wise i am now going to stick with my new index Index and a 3070 for the next few years PCVR wise, which seems to be a nice sweet spot, that is until the PSVRII appears, then PCVR might lose me as i saw what the PS5 did for old PSVR games, so i have no worries that the PSVRII is going to be mind blowing when it drops, can't wait. 🙂

Sounds like a great plan. I may jump on the PSVR2 too later. Latest rumors say that Valve is years from making a new hmd.  To be frank, with games like Lone Echo 2, Tempestfall, Furious Seas, Wizards Dark Times and more of the most demanding VR games taking me down to SteamVR res 200% just to barely get 90 fps with an oc'ed RTX 3090, Index may hold for many years to come, lol.

I may need a RTX 4090 or even 5090 before I can get optimal image quality using Index in Lone Echo 2. Not even joking - Lone Echo 2 looks amazing with res 300+ %, but that res is a no go even with the RTX 3090. So enjoy the Index, it's not at all dated nor obsolete 🤓

Saw this post header over on the MSFS 2020 forum this morning.

VR Mode Smooth, Until The Headset Activates! Quest 2 Stuttering Badly, Regardless of Headroom

The description sure sounds very familiar to what my Vive Pro 2 is doing as well with Windows 11.

Sounds like Oculus and HTC are having very similar issue with Windows 11... hoping they both can get it ironed out very soon!

Not easy to phrase such questions:

Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/comments/r757a0/how_much_people_are_willing_to_spend_on_vr/

So some of us are among the 3% for basic VR gear, lol - but I'm not spending anything/much on "advanced VR gear" (did buy the X52 HOTAS for Squadrons if that counts 🤔) because most of the games I play don't support it - or it looks too big/awkward, it has nothing to do with the money.

Guess I am very much in the 3% category.

Also they forgot the gpus - the hmds are the cheap stuff, 3k gpus not so much, lol.

Not sure why RoadToVR reposted this news from May 2021:

https://www.roadtovr.com/gabe-valve-vr-headset-bci-investments/

- but maybe as a response to Tyler's latest "findings":

Valve later told IGN this:

https://twitter.com/Tyler_McV/status/1465784087449415685?

- but it seems IGN has now removed that comment from their article, let's keep it here though 🙂

In short - I don't think anyone but Valve (maybe, lol) has a clue where Valve is going next...

The fact that Valve took out a patent for a stand-alone headset does qualify as a "clue" tho, right?

While nobody other than Valve can be 100% certain, we can certainly take some clues and conclude that Valve will likely develop their first real stand-alone VR HMD. It's not certain, but clues indicate as much.

Many patents never come to fruition. They rush to file for patents on anything they may consider developing.

Never liked the demo much, but Vertigo 2 looks a lot better in this new video:

Recommended gpu is now a GTX 1080 Ti or better, so having a fast Series 20 or 30 desktop gpu might be a great idea 😉

Great dynamic shadows, this is indeed true PCVR, but not sure the RTX 3090 can do much more than res 250% with the Index 90 Hz...

Well to be "true PCVR" the title would need to offer some pretty hefty gameworld interactions. Simply adding a GPU feature alone doesn't constitute PCVR. I am interested in seeing what this title offers in terms of gameplay and immersive environments beyond textures.

I finally cracked the code to Squadrons - and really had a day of days. I haven't played Squadrons for long. Starting the game using Index 90 Hz and Ultra graphics, the game was fine, but far from perfect due to a lot of micro-stuttering. Got so annoyed that I then tried the lowest graphics setting to get better performance - but to my amazement I got the exact same annoying micro-stuttering. Pretty sure many would consider the game really smooth on my rig, but most people are blind and have no clue what optimal smoothness feels like.

I can recall a similar experience when playing Doom 3 - the one and only way to get that game to perform perfectly was to get solid 60 fps in 60 Hz. 85 fps in 85 Hz would create similar micro-stuttering. Carmack later revealed that the game had a 60 fps tick-rate, so you needed solid 60 fps for optimal performance, no more and no less.

So I made a bold move and changed Squadrons from 90 to 120 Hz - and Eureka! - suddenly the game was smooth as silk - or as perfect as possible when getting 2 x 60 fps in 120 Hz.

Did read that the game was made for 60 fps PSVR - and 60 fps may be the target also for the 2D version.

Note that I'm using Index res 200% and the Ultra setting - and key to getting solid 60 fps is the RTX 3090. My GTX 1080 could never do that.

It was extremely awesome - and I consider it a great gift to get this experience - finally to experience Squadrons in all its glory and with totally smooth performance. Really felt like being in a Star Wars movie. I've started replaying the game, using 120 Hz, Index res 200% and Ultra graphics totally are game changers. I'm no longer playing a game - I'm finally there! 🙂

Yeah Squadrons is great for sure. I think I have played through the campaign like three times now. And there will undoubtedly be a fourth as well.

RoadToVR just confirmed my thoughts 🤓 If there was anything better, I would have bought it:

I agree the Index is a great headset and quite versatile. However I actually prefer the Vive Pro 2 with the Index tracking system and controllers.

^^^Well i have returned the Index HMD and i have also ditched the Quest II as i am now done with any and all LCD based HMDs, they are just garbage compared to any and any Oled panels based HMDs, that grey haze that every single LCD based HMD suffers from due to that awful back lighting and back light bleeding that LCD suffers from is just too much of a annoyance, so i am back to my OG Vive and CV1, and will wait for the PSVR II, although i will admit that the Cv1/OG vive looks great with some SS on my RTX3070, and proof these old HMds really do get a boost from better hardware, and just goes to show you that both these HMDs were designed with quality and care in mind, before we went down this cheap mass produced quantity over quality plastic garbage that is thrown out the door as VR today.

That's why I too still have the Rift CV1 - the Index is not a replacement, but an addition. That said games with some light do look much better with the Index - but many games either needing better blacks or using TAA look much better using CV1 oled. I fully agree that oled is king - but in Alyx Index is much better than CV1, unfortunately there are still few games with 4k-ish ultramersion textures to truly support the Index. In Star Wars Squadrons you need 120 Hz to fit the 60 fps glass shoe - or that game will never be totally smooth.  Guess that's a win for PSVR which also uses oled 😉
