Must say that it's hard to keep up the motivation with these reviews - this is another CV1 to Index, and probably a great one, but it more or less concludes that the CV1 is nearly just as great (I've put some text in bold):

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Rune to most a CV1 and index are to close and similar to tell much of a difference.
Especially new folks who are just being introduced to VR.
We elitist enthusist snobs know better because well Punkies out guys we have a more refined sense of what to look for.

That being said a professional or semi-professional reviewer who wants to be taken seriously should know the F’n difference!
Other then the controllers ;which admitedly I like the Touch better; it is like comparing a 1980’s stock Camero to a present day stock Camero.
Sure they both look nice and they are both fast one obviously has better engineering.

True...

So how do we break it to the Index owners?

Any users on here with the index and our Flyinside Flight Sim can test if the headset works ok under SteamVR option please :)

I have it, I'll check it out this evening. Been meaning to just been busy.

As far as Index, if this thing didn't have glare it would be a near perfect headset. I love everything else about it. I still can't get over how good the tracking is. I haven't had so much as a single jitter with it. It's just rock solid and accurate everywhere.

And while the knuckles aren't nearly as ergonomic as the Touch, they're still pretty good to me.

But that glare is really bugging the shit out of me.  Without the glare, I'd easily recommend it for a grand but with...no way.
For most of my games it's not a problem... but when it's visible it literally ruins the game and is annoying af because it kills immersion. I look for Oculus to make all of their exclusives have more contrast scenes to give extra glare to the Index since the Rift-S won't have it.  :D

I'm planning to make my ultimate decision on whether to keep this thing or not this weekend.

Not sure Oculus needs a killer when it comes to PC VR. They threw themselves on their own sword. They are no longer the King to topple from the throne. In fact there is no King at the moment. If they had proceeded with half dome, I would have no doubt it would have kicked Index's arse.

Large FOV Rune? You sure about that.  Anyhow.
First Impressions of Index vs Rift S, Pimax, HP Reverb, and Samsung Odyssey+

submitted 14 hours ago by evertec

Just a few quick thoughts from using the Index for a couple hours vs my other headsets.

Rift S: The Index is very similar in terms of black levels, colors, SDE, and resolution to the Rift S. Where it pulls ahead for me is the refresh rate and FOV. The FOV is "good enough" on the Index whereas the Rift S you definitely wish for more. The 120/144hz modes of the Index are certainly nice, but I couldn't get many games to work without reprojection without turning settings down so that the image quality suffered compared to the S on my 1080ti. Games like Beat Saber, Space Pirate Trainer, Fruit Ninja all work great at 144, but anything more complex I think I prefer 90 with all the settings on max. God rays/glare is almost nonexistent on the Rift S, but there is noticeable glare on the Index. With the new update for tracking, I really don't have an issue with the inside out tracking on Rift S so I consider that a wash considering it makes the S easier to set up, more portable, and less obtrusive in the room. The Index as an overall package is certainly better than the Rift S, but $600 better? Not for most people. I will still recommend Rift S for most people new to VR as the ecosystem and ease of use are top notch.

Pimax: I have had both the 5K+ and the 8K models. I find the Index to be clearer than the 5k+, without the lens distortions that both Pimax models have. The 8K isn't as clear as the Index or 5K+ model but has a little bit better colors and SDE. The horizontal FOV of the Index isn't nearly as high as the Pimaxes, even if you set the Pimax to low FOV in the software. The vertical FOV is comparable though.

Samsung Odyssey+: The Odyssey+ has far better black levels and colors than any of the other headsets since it uses OLED. The SDE is very good, perhaps slightly better than the Index and Rift S. The lenses have some issues where you can see the concentric Fresnel rings sometimes, and the clarity of the image isn't as good as any of the others due to its pentile subpixel arrangement.

HP Reverb: The resolution/PPD of this headset is far above any of the others I have. The image is very crisp and clear and text and fine detail is evident. The colors and blacks are equivalent to the other LCD headsets, maybe slightly worse than the Rift S and Index. Horizontal FOV is comparable to Index for me (I have a 57mm IPD), but vertical FOV is worse, and you can notice the bottom of the screen itself sometimes, which is a little bit immersion breaking. I've seen a couple reviewers comment on Mura, and I can see a little bit on bright backgrounds, but not really much worse than the Index or Odyssey+.

My conclusion with this limited time I've had with the Index and Reverb is for now, overall, the Reverb wins. The resolution is just so far above everything else and even with the loss in FOV, it wows and immerses me more than any of the others. The Index controllers work with the WMR sets using OpenVRSpace Calibrator so I think I'm going to sell or return the Index but keep the controllers with the Reverb.

Good point - some experience a larger FOV, some don't. I get the impression it depends on your ability to dial in the lenses. If you don't dial in the lenses it seems FOV is similar to CV1.
BTW, I was thinking - for all of us using glasses - that maybe it's an idea to keep the protective film on the lenses, then put on the hmd and then slowly and very carefully dial in the lenses and see how far you can go. Would be awful scratching the lenses maybe the first time you try the HMD - like it seems a few users have done.

Reverb + Knuckles could be an interesting solution too.

Did have a great time in Vanishing Realms yesterday using the CV1 ss 2.0 in solid 90 fps  didn't see any SDE, colors were great, everything was sharp even 50 meters away and more - but Vanishing Realms isn't a demanding game, and there's full locomotion working against any SDE. Still seems like a luxury (first world) problem whether or not upgrading to Index is a good thing. Vanishing Realms probably have the best hit detection, so sword fighting is really awesome - and keeps me coming back to the game - and the dev has made a clever although simple design that works great.

@pyroth309 - If something was bugging the shit out of me i'd have to return it, but that's just me. The Rift S tracking was bugging the shit out of me and I returned it before they fixed it. I'm just waiting to see what HTC Cosmos has to offer now and at what price before I purchase another headset. I'll avoid the Valve index though due to the glare because that would bug the shit out of me.
I had hoped Valve index would be the VR headset for me due to it's premium design, but some of it's problems have put me right off it. At £920 I wouldn't want any anything bugging me and that's how I look at it.

If possible I'd love to have CV1 and Index (unless Pyroth309 completely derails my dreams of getting one...) connected at the same time to the same rig. I just want to use one HMD at a time - not both - but someone replied to me on Reddit - and if that'll work it seems pretty wild/amazing:

"I was able to run my Cv1 and index off a single PC with my GF. She used rec room through home and I played through steam. It worked fine minus the terrible mapping for index controllers currently for the game."

(I think that GF is short for girlfriend and not GeForce, lol.)

So you can use both at the same time and play together? - I think Linus got it working using 3 HMDs connected to the same rig, although that rig was extremely powerful.

I just want the CV1 for Oculus Home and Index for SteamVR Home.

I fully agree - but it was my impression that the dude writing the "good - bad - ugly" review on Reddit had been using the CV1 for a long time.

Was just thinking that if I expect the lighthouses to whine loudly, the extra fov to be non-existing, the glare to be massive, blacks being like staring at the sun, the controllers to be truly awkward, some severe tech problems (cable not connected issue etc.) then there's probably no way I won't be positively surprised by the Index, lol. Just need to have extremely low expectations, it works great for many things in this world o:)

BTW, Valve employees respond to some posts on Index Reddit, but some users trying to return the Index have gotten no response - so beware of that when committing to the purchase. Of course Valve must respond, but like Oculus Support being slow to respond after the Rift-S launch, Valve Support may currently be overwhelmed by the amount of support needed - also due to faulty Knuckles and other issues.
