Valve Announces the Steam Frame VR Headset

Competition is good, we've been a bit lacking in VR options lately.
Valve have announced the Steam Frame.

It's a mobile headset running on a Snapdragon SOC (similar to Quests). It's also got wireless streaming (with a few interesting tricks) and uses 4 camera inside out tracking with inbuilt IR LED illuminators for dark rooms.

Here's the specs.

  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU (more powerful than the Quest 3 Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2).
  • 16GB ram.
  • Micro sd card slot for up to 1TB storage.
  • Back of the head mounted battery pack.
  • 2160x2160 per eye LCD screens.
  • 72-144Hz refresh.
  • Pancake lenses.
  • 60-70mm IPD
  • 110 degree fov (so similar to Quest 3).
  • Four monochrome IR cameras for inside out tracking and controller tracking.
  • It can do pass through video, but only monochrome.
  • Two eye tracking cameras.
  • IR illuminators to light up dark rooms for tracking.
  • Expansion port (maybe this could do better than USB 2.0? Don't know)
  • Dual wifi 7. One wifi (5GHz) for internet, another separate wifi (6GHz) for streaming video audio from PC. (So internet doesn't affect your stream quality)
  • Comes with a 6GHz wifi 6e dongle.
  • 440g (the Quest 3 is 515g).
  • Runs SteamOS instead of Android.
  • Has a PC emulator, you can run PC Windows games standalone on the headset without a PC (probably very limited performance).
  • Controllers copied from the Quest series, including using AA batteries. Slight different is the left controller has a dpad and the right controller has ABXY buttons and index finger trigger and bumper on each, so it can fully mimic a gamepad.
  • Capacitive finger tracking on the handles.

One interesting feature is Foveated Streaming. It uses eye tracking to prioritise streaming pixels where you are looking. (Foveated Rendering helps with FPS, but not streaming quality)

It probably isn't going to handle USB streaming. The specs say the only USB port on it is only rated at USB 2.0.

So we have a very interesting Quest 3 competitor. Slightly lower pixel count (4.5 vs 4.6 MP of the Quest 3), more powerful CPU/GPU, expandable storage, optimisations like foveated streaming and dual wifi to give the better PCVR, controllers that have feature parity with console controllers, lighter, better weight distribution with rear battery, and pancake lenses.
On the other hand, it can't do colour pass through and the cameras don't match your eye position, so it's going to be like a Quest 2 with monochrome and reprojected distortion (hopefully higher res though).

It's running Linux (SteamOS), so it's going to be far more open than Meta's headsets (look at the stuff Google is trying to lock down in Android to stop side loading). Also no social media account, so you aren't going to get banned from VR because somebody hacked your instagram (this forum has had years of complaints about how the accounts get tied together and Meta still can't fix it).

I hope when they copied the Quest controllers they didn't copy the misalignment Meta did.

No prices announced yet. It will come out early 2026. Best news (I'm sure you were all wondering), Australia is getting them on day 1, no waiting years like for the Index.

Unless I hear something really bad, I'll definitely add one to my VR collection. Although I haven't read any reviews yet (been working), so maybe it sucks. :)

Edit: From the Gamers Nexus video on it... turns out the Steam Controller (the new one not the old one) has IR LEDs in it so the Frame can track the gamepad position. That's cool.

Another detail, the Frame has a PCIe Gen 4 expansion port (above the nose gap) that they say can handle dual camera feeds using 8 lanes at 2.5 Gbps. That sounds like there could be an optional colour passthrough addon.

Someone on reddit said Valve support got back to them and Australians don't need the age verification thing to buy the Frame.

kojack Likewise mate (1Tb).  I should get this sometime next week!  I also purchased the psu, accessories kit, and RGB color passthrough module.  Now I'm going to have to save up for Meta's new PCVR headset (Q4 Pro?).  I hope they don't release this too soon, lol!

I got the accessory kit (mainly for the top strap, with a balanced weight at front and back I feel a head strap will work better and not need as much tightening as a quest 3 top strap). I have better PSUs already. I may get the colour cameras, but I want to know the Frame is good enough that I can move away from the Quest 3 before I spend more on it.

The Meta codename Phoenix doesn't really appeal to me, based on the tiny amount of info we have. They will need to reveal something pretty amazing to make me buy a 9th Meta headset. Maybe if they've finalised one of their varifocal designs, that would be cool (but unlikely).

Yay, just got my tracked number. But at 8:50pm Tuesday.

So Auspost will probably pick it up tomorrow. It's probably in sydney, so it could reach brisbane thursday. But then they might not put it on the truck for delivery until friday (the one day each week I'm not at home).

Edit: The Auspost tracking says ETA is Wednesday. It also says Auspost processed the shipping info at 2am tomorrow. So we've got some time travel going on. It can't be due to time zones, it would have to be in GMT+15 which is impossible.

I'd love to get it tomorrow, but I don't believe it.

People are getting their Frames (mine should be Thursday).

I see some mixed opinions. I've seen one person say it keeps losing room tracking while playing. But reviewers said the room tracking was great. (I don't 100% trust reviewers)

Apparently streaming is worse (lower image quality) than Virtual Desktop to a Quest 3.

    Streaming is darker than expected.

But these things seem to be software related. Remember that it too years for Oculus to fix the Rift CV1's tracking (used to glitch while swapping cameras) and oled mura (good old "spud"). The Quest 1 had issues too, bad near controller tracking they had to fix. I couldn't even use my Rift-S reliably until I bought a powered usb hub, or my CV1 until I bought PCIe expansion cards. This is Valve's first stand alone headset and first not using lighthouse, so it may take time to fix. Expected on bleeding edge purchases.

For the darkness, I've seen one possible answer. Apparently the streaming defaults to turning on a blank steam overlay over the video which is darker (to show the overlay content easier, except its empty). If you go into the PCVR SteamVR settings and turn off the overlays it brightens up. But I've only seen one person report that.

Also the lower image quality is only for streaming, not stand alone which looks fine. So we need improved Steam Link, or wait for Virtual Desktop to have Frame support.

(I gave up on the Meta Quest app, don't even have it installed on my new PC, and I only use Virtual Desktop to my Quest 3. I was on wifi, but now I'm using the experimental USB support)

So looks like teething issues, but nothing that won't be fixed over time, assuming Valve keep working on the software.

(Of course would be nice if a $1969au headset had polished software)

Really interested to hear your impressions on the frame.

It will certainly be interesting to see which developers bother to go back to their VR titles and try and make them run well on ARM / encoorporate foveated rendering. I believe Valve does the heavy lifting with a version of proton that converts Windows to ARM, I wonder if they have a similarly simple implementation for eye tracking?

I do feel a little deja vu for vr in 2017, it still feels we haven't quite moved it on to another level yet, and the industry still seems confused on where to go. Mixed reality, VR, wearables. I really wish there was a proper quest 4 on the cards, next gen soc, higher resolution, oled display.

    Going back to the frame..

Has anyone managed to compare latency figures for a good virtual desktop wireless connection Vs using the new dongle yet? I currently get around 40ms using a dedicated router which feels good but nothing like standalone. Every weapon feels so light when I've not played standalone for a bit!

I've only just started the setup process, it's downloading an update.

But what I've noticed so far.

    • Lenses are inferior to Quest 3. Not as bad as Quest 2 or Quest 3s, but definite blurring around the edges.
    • Text was oddly blurry even in the centre if I moved 2m from the UI panel. Like it was low res. Looked nice up close. Like it was annoying to read the time zone list, and if I got closer to it the panel moved away from me.
    • Passthrough is fine, I walked around my room with it on. Oddly dark and annoying colour, but it's pretty clear. Not like Quest 2 fuzzy mess. Quest 3 clearly better, but I don't do MR so not an issue really.
    • Controllers have slight Quest 3 issue: aim point doesn't line up with handle forward direction! NO!!!!
It's not as bad as the Quest 3 which is 15 degrees off. This is maybe in the 5-10 range. The CV1, Rift-S, Quest 1 and Quest 2 don't suffer from this.
My hope is this is just the UI pointer doing it wrong but games will have the true forward axis.
      Sigh.
Controllers have two stage click on the grip triggers. Feels odd, I'm used to holding the grips in without clicking.
    • Feels comfortable on my face. Very soft padding.
    • Something nobody has mentioned in reviews I've seen: because there are no side arms like the Quest series, the straps are tight against your ears. Way more uncomfortable than a Quest 3 where the side straps go over the tops of my ears.
    • The battery pack wants to slip down the back of my head. I should put on the top strap.
    • Worse controller tracking at low side positions. Like if your hands are by your side, they lose position tracking and fall back to 3DOF. The Quest 3 handles that fine. This is because the side cameras on the Frame aim up while the Quest 3 aim down. So the frame would have better over head tracking but Quest 3 has better down low tracking. Not as bad as the HP Reverb G2 (horrible low tracking) but that headset was also half the price. I guess Valve's design team play a lot of games where you do stuff over your shoulder.

    First game experience.

I'm worried about controller aim. How well does emulation stuff work? Ok, let's install the Windows SteamVR version of Audica as stand alone! So windows to linux and intel to arm emulation going on.

Ran perfectly. Frame rate was a little low, but head tracking was smooth (so some form of ASW going on?). The guns lined up correctly! It seems only the UI laser pointers are off to the side, in game I was nailing notes without any adjustment. Fully playable. (I wish Audica wasn't abandoned. It's a great game)

    Oh, setup.
No mobile app needed. I started it up and it wanted my wifi password. It downloaded some updates. Then I logged in to Steam. You can display a qr code and aim your phone at the lens, but that needs the Steam mobile app. Or I could just type my user name and password. But my password is LONG. So I plugged my Input Stick (bluetooth keyboard emulator usb device for sending passwords from a phone to a PC) into the Frame and sent the password. That's it, I'm in.

Hmm, a LOT of lens glare when there's bright objects and a dark background.

I'll try Audica with streaming next.

No, no further testing, headset has 5min of battery left. :)

I started the Quest native version of Audica on my Quest 3. Better looking and faster than the emulated one. But the controllers are so misaligned it's comical. At least the game has calibration.

Another thing that will take a bit of getting used to: they swapped the button and thumbstick positions. The thumbsticks are towards the centre and buttons are towards the outside. Rift/Quest do it the opposite. So a bit like swapping between a playstation and xbox controller.

So Meta's new VR headset, the Meta VR Glasses, announced at Connect 2026 today.

Same price as the 1TB Steam Frame ($1299us) but doesn't come with controllers.

Back to the Frame (still charging though).

Controllers don't wake up when you move them or press buttons/triggers. You have to press the indented power buttons.

Once awake, they don't actually control the Frame. You first have to press the grip triggers in to activate laser pointer mode, then you can click on stuff.

Hmm, been charging for around 50min (65W Ugreen charger and 36W cable). It's only at 10% battery which it estimates as 9min remaining. So, umm, 10 hours remaining to charge?

I know there was a software issue with very slow charging for reviewers that Valve fixed, I guess it isn't installed by default?

Make sure your charger is PD or QC protocol compliant.

Edit: yup, Ugreen 65W does appear to support PD/QC.

First time I used my Quest 3, it took about 10h to charge. After that, it was always fast.

I haven't had a chance to do much with the Frame yet. Had to work. But weekend time, so I'll check it more.

    • I like that I can just open a Linux terminal window in the headset.
    • Plugging it into a computer doesn't expose it as a storage device like Quests. Instead since it's effectively a Linux PC, you can create network shares or connect to it over wifi with tools like Filezilla or ssh.
    • I think I've turned off eye tracking, but now I can't find the option to turn it back on. There's like 4 different places for settings and I can't find it in any of them.
    • The dongle is getting as bad as 27ms pings, while my wifi is 2.5ms (reported by SteamVR).
    • I really hate how Steam VR works.

Here's MS Flightsim 2020 running on the Frame.

I boosted it to 200% res (just over 3000x3000 per eye) so it would look better. Not bad, but the instruments are hard to read. The middle map display on the plane's dash is unreadable unless you lean in a lot. Framerate is a little jerky too. There's so many settings I haven't messed with, and eye tracking seems to be off. Also I don't know how to get a framerate display. (There's so little info online)
But I was able to start the game, switch to VR mode and take off using just the Frame's controllers.

I see someone on Reddit made a post saying he's disappointed with the Frame. Apparently he then got heaps of abusive DMs from fanboys insulting him or calling him a Meta shill.

Yeah, I've had that. I was called a Meta shill on youtube when I complained about the HP Reverb G2's controller tracking.

I've also played X-Plane with it. No issues except still dealing with settings. Full interactable cockpit with Frame controllers like MSFS.
