Question

Why do people not want to show their faces with a profile photo?

Hi everyone,

Just wondered why majority of people here don't want to show their faces to communicate.
Why is this?

I am not sure if we took this topic to complete and total awesomeness or abject horror!

I would show myself on my profile picture but I'm actually invisible so even I don't know what I look like anymore. That's why I use an Avatar so people can stop bumping into me when visiting me in the Oasis.

Can't speak for others but I came from before internet times, I'm a gen x that was there when it came to be.  I'm from that small portion of that older generation that doesn't like to share stuff like photos.  My facebook page still has that silhouette instead of a picture.  It was a different time, the internet was a "dangerous" place where predators might lurk and you were taught to never send any email off until you were absolutely sure it didn't have anything you didn't want out there in it because once it went out it was never coming back.  Fast Forward to today and you'd think these lessons were never taught.

Just because someone posts a picture of a real person doesn't mean that they are that person.

A "catfish" is someone pretending to be someone they are not on the internet. A catfish usually targets a victim or has someone they are pretending for. Usually people intend catfishing as a romance scam on dating websites or seeking online relationships. People use fake profile pictures, names, and often genders. Catfishers create fake profiles to trick people into thinking they are someone else. Usually the fabricated life displayed is the one they wish was their own, making it easy to act as if it is really them.

My cousin was a catfisher.  I don't know if he still does it.  It was an embarrassing situation to watch unfold from a 3rd party perspective, I can't imagine why he does it.  He must be addicted to being embarrassed.  My friend and I have a theory that to him ANY attention is good attention.  He would portray himself as a physically fit Caucasian male who is a professional skater, he'd send pics of guy models that of course were attractive.  This would go on for a long time as if the amount of time will defuse the inevitable outcome.  Then the meeting would occur.   Imagine the shock from the girl that just got catfished when they go to meet their 6"1 tall Caucasian Hunk that's built like an ambercombie model only to be met by a 5"9 asain male with no muscles to speak of and a bad attitude when the girl shows even the slightest hint of surprise.

I don't get it, I just don't understand, but my god if I have the chance, I'm not missing that trainwreck, It's cringy and funny to see it play out.  The sad thing is he's done this countless times.

Well @Saffieyah I hope the responses to me posting my pic give you a good indication as to why people don't post their real pictures.

It's dangerous to share any information that can be used to track you down in real life.

Someone can become obsessed with you and use your picture or whatever information you revealed to find you in real life. It's not worth taking the risk.

Also, people have gotten fired for things they said on Facebook or other sites. If I say something offensive, there is no way for someone to find me in real life without Oculus/Facebook giving them my email. Then they would need gmail to give them my other details.

There's a certain amount of freedom to anonymity.

You're pretty so I can see why you want to show your face. If you want to work at Oculus go to their office in person otherwise your resume just goes on a huge pile.
