Oculus Rift S Screen stays black

I've been looking everywhere on the internet, tried every solution found on reddit and whatsoever, even tried to use software to bypass meta software...

Looks like Facebook killed the Oculus Rift S.

I cannot contact support because my serial is not recognized, it's ridiculous. I was so disappointed and sad when I saw Facebook taking over Oculus, and I was right, it's become awful, and now after the last update, the Rift S worked only once and now never anymore. Sensor, remotes and everything works, except that the screen stays black. Nothing changed and now i have a nice piece of technology that does not work

This is extremely disrespectful, pushing people to buy new products by killing the old ones. It is unfair, as I paid money for a device that was working, and i really WISH that Facebook wouldn't have forced us to use their ridiculous software.

Who's going to refund me for a 5 years old device that was working perfectly, always taken care of and put back in its box at every use, looking brand new, no damage to cables or anything.

There MUST be a workaround to make it work again. Please, solve. I don't want to buy a standalone device.

My computer did not get any update so it's all on facebook. I would write so many offensive words to their engineers and managers but it's pointless, hoping to get a reply and a fix that actually works, avoiding software like OculusKiller (which did not work anyway) or other payware.

Thanks.

In my case i found out what was it: nVidia Surround and Meta software are not compatible.

Disabling nVidia Surround every time that i want to use the Oculus Rift S works, but it's annoying.

Hey there vdecataldo, we came across your post and wanted to offer some assistance.

We want all of our users to have the best experience possible, therefore, let's try and get this sorted for you as soon as possible.

Firstly, please check to ensure your PC is compatible. The minimum and recommended requirements can be found here.

Could we then ask you to update the graphics drivers? These can be downloaded directly from the GeForce or AMD website, depending on if your graphics card is NVIDIA or AMD.

Once you've updated the drivers, please try the headset on another computer.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to reach out to our Customer Support team. They can be contacted via our website.

Hope to hear from you soon!

That's the issue: updates.

thank you for the generic answer, but as I said, I did try a good amount of things.

My computer is compatible? Yes, as i already wrote, I've been using the Oculus Rift S without any issue for the last 5 years.

Updates? Yes, i did them, and that's the issue. the Meta software forced updates blocked me from using the device. there's no other reason for it to stop working. Drivers were updated yesterday, Meta software was reinstalled yesterday after cleaning all the folders in my system.

The Oculus default app was working fine and Meta forced us to use their software, how sad to be honest. A thing that works should not be touched, or updated. Basic rule of information technology that nobody respects.

My last resource is going to test the device on another computer, but it's not as easy as you think to find a computer that can support the Rift S (Display Port or compatible USB-C + adapter ,USB-3, and a person willing to let me use a gaming computer).

I see over the internet that I am not the only one with this issue, so there should be a fix somewhere.

I'll come back once I'll find some good soul that can make me test the device on their expensive computer, since you know, i don't have 2 gaming devices, why would I.

Best

The oculus works tested on another computer.

Apparently, disabling nVidia Surround fixed the issue.

steps:

  • disable surround
  • verify that oculus rift works (it does)
  • re-enable surround
  • verify that oculus rift still works (it does)

I never had this kind of issue. Is there any conflict in the latest firmware of oculus rift S and/or meta link software that could possibly make things go south with nVidia Surround enabled?

Is there a potential fix? re-enabling surround is not an issue, more a nuisance.

Best

I’m having the same issue. I used this for work. I designed footwear in 3d and used the rift to show Walmart buyers the different variations without physical samples.

now the screen is black. I checked everything. I deleted and reinstalled, and now I’m at the point where everything is working on the app, power, controllers, and then it says put the header on and finish installation. But the screens black. Extremely frustrating and I’m about to put this on blast and share this terrible experience.

Are you using nVidia Surround? The software that simulates one single screen when you have 2 or more connected?

Same issue here, my occulus rift was working just fine today and now suddenly I just have a black screen.
Did the uninstall reinstall with deleting files in AppData.
Still black screen. I still have sound and mic that are functionning but no display, only black screen.
When I put on the headset I have a notification saying "Meta Quest Link ne fonctinne pas correctement" (My sytem is in French).
Seems like you have a compability problem. Been using my headset since 2020 with the same computer that still validates the compatibility.
The only reason it can fail is the Meta Horizon Software.
Please update the case.
The app forces value to my usb ports too, saying it's 2.0 when they are 3.0
Firmware version:
709/b1ae4f61ae

EDIT:
VIBE_OFFICER find a Way
Simple way: launch Meta Horizon link without being connected to internet.

AN OTHER WAY:
Simply Block all outbound traffic of Meta in Firewall

Same issue here, everything worked completely normal, suddenly today when I put these on, everything else works but the screen. Just ridiculous how the software is so unreliable.

Found a fix for my rift S. Restart computer and do not connect to internet, wifi or ethernet. Instantly got the view back this way. Issue seems to be that once the software is connected to Internet it **bleep**s everything up idk.

Thanks Meta <3 never buying this **bleep** again.

thank you, you are worth more than this entire dogwater company. I have simply blocked all its executables in windows firewall, inbound and outbound, restarted the pc and it worked fine. I intend to keep it blocked for all eternity, no more forced dogwater updates with 0 notes for me.

I would love to share my conversation with meta customer support. I had the same issue, out of warranty and only used it 5 times for work. Meta claims this is an “unusual” issue and it rarely happens to this model. The internet says otherwise.

they offered me a replacement, same POS model, for $150. I said no because they are phasing this model out, so why would I want that?

I asked for a discount on a new model, they declined.

I work with Walmart and Target in footwear. I was training the buyers, which there are 100’s of, to buy footwear based on a 3d model vs physical sample, saving millions in shipping, labor and tariffs. I did this using the oculus. Now I can’t do that, and I’m instructing all the buyers to NOt use meta-

Exact Same issues as mentioned above.  Everything fine but a blank display.  Why not stop forcing your updates if a RIFT or RIFT S is detected.

Quality of your updates and forcing non-compliant code to older headsets really shows laziness on META's part.

While I agree with you, the issue isn't about the update. An update was pushed at the same time, but you would experience the same issue by downgrading the app.

Yes I pulled the network cable booted up, logged in, booted up my apps and was good to go.
