Quest 2 - Software Update Required

I have had this issue trying to pair both of my Quest 2's for the last 4 days. When you click 'try again' it just loops back to this screen.

I have tried reinstalling the app (including updating the app), using an IOS phone and using an Android phone, I have even factory reset one of the devices. Still get the below message when I try to pair this device to any phone.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Cheers

For all users having this issue, I received an RMA refurbished unit after my original developed a fault.

The problem seems to be (from what I understand) the refurbished units were shipped with an old operating version, and need to be upgraded. You can do this with a PC, downloading the firmware and also the Android Debug bridge on a PC running Windows 10, 11 or a Mac.
See my fixed link with organised steps and hopefully more info - this only works for PC/MACs, I do not know on mobiles, but I can assist with PC users if needed

Once you have downloaded the firmware and installed the bridge, you need to boot the device into Sideload update. and from the PC/Computer with the above installed, run the adb (Android debug bridge command to push the new firmware to the Quest 2) Once this has occured the unit will update, reboot. Next load the phone app and add it as a new Quest 2 device, it will search for it, but even though it prompts for a code and you key it, it might fail, so go back one step and try again  - which is what I did and it then paired fine. It will still show the display for the code, but it will allow the contollers to pair (in the app), once done it will go through the intro and then reboot again and apply more updates.. then its sorted. It should appear in your app once it has paired with the serial number. For those in the UK (which is where I am based) I can do a zoom if needed.
.

NOTE: Whilst Oculus Support has given a warning about doing this and possible problems - which is good advice - the original post this was taken from was approved by Oculus/Meta support, so I have posted that original link here as proof.

If the firmware load is no good the recovery system will simply not write it to ROM flash memory.

This is what I suspected also, but meta support has been absolutely useless. They just give a canned response to everything lol. They also refuse to send another replacement even though it has been months since I've been able to get my device online.

Do you have a PC? and do you want to go through the upgrade and sort it ? I can do a zoom now if needed.

tried sideloading with v42 update. Sideload completes > boot device  up > try pairing > same response with software update required

Steps taken:

1. downloaded adb

2. downloaded v42

3. made quest 2 go into sideload mode > plugged into pc > purple LED

4. command propt run as admin > cd c:\adb > adb sideload v42.zip

update complete: Total xfer: 1.00x

No changes. software update required.

Some people here just barely encountered this maybe due to lack of usage. Some others like me has had this issue for months now lol.

You need v43 (or even V44), v42 wont work with the apps as they are only V44 compat.
If you need a zoom (and its not late - I am UK) I might be around to help.

Glad it worked!!! - Just wish Meta engineers and support teams provided updates and proper docs on how others can do this.

As someone who works in manufacturing, I suppose there was insufficient testing done on the update they are using for refurbished units. These are supposed to be tested before releasing into the field. Im guessing they just signed off and said, 'we should be fine'. Now, they are just too lazy to update the flash SW; which shouldnt take longer than a week or two. Support on the other hand is just as blind as we are except for a few select people. Eng just isnt prioritizing this because it's "not as important' to them i guess.

Have you tried this on the Quest 2?

As long as you have a PC and Cable you can probably upgrade it to V43....

(To anyone seeing this) I wouldn't fully recommend this as it can void your warranty and brick your headset if done improperly.

If you choose to do so, at your own discretion, we can't really stop you. Just be weary and keep in mind the possible repercussions.

I realise there are risks  but the problem is that Meta are shipping RMA Refurbished Quest 2's with V42 versions which are not compatible with the app so they wont pair with the app, therefore users are in a no win scenario, as they cant pair it, and support say its server hardware related and engineers are working on, but it seems to be ongoing and emerging for months.  Mobile users are more stuck as they have no way to update their headsets from a mobile phone.
Meta seem to not be publishing there is a problem on their web site or advising customers to the issue, and the number of users unhappy is rising. I had a working Q2 with a battery fault, it was replaced with a RMA Refurbished Q2 using V42 which wont pair or work.   All the users who do this are all suffering RMA Refurbished units and those who dont, are users having problems with the Oculus/Meta account merger, auto software update or have already got hardware problems.
Certainly there are always risks and I have added this to the top of my post, I even emailed senior staff at Meta / FB and had no replies to anything,
Meta need to address the issue and publish a solution or reliable work around or fix until hardware issues are resolved.

I also have this problem, it is now October and there still doesn't seem to be a solution to this problem, so people with a £400 VR headset have something that is as good as a brick.  This is absolutely ridiculous and should have been sorted a long time go, come on Meta get your fingers out and get it sorted.

A big thanks to Chris-K who sent me a pm with a link on how to sort this, got there in the end.

Oculus support is now giving this out as a solution. Hopefully Kris-K gets compensated financially for coming up with this fix,

Cordialement.

For those who need a translation for Terrarum5660, google translated this as:

Hello, I have the same problem for connecting the samsung gear vr oculus. I just created an account with my facebook account. Yesterday impossible to connnecter me with this famous message 'software update'

I managed to deflect this problem by connecting all my facebook accounts in the "meta account space" section in the facebook settings (at the very bottom) and activating "allow all accounts to connect to each other
only mtn, when I try to log in with my facebook ID and the right password (I disconnected and reconnect the facebook app) the interface tells me below the password No network connection (I tried without wifi it doesn't work either.)

I can't find a solution and know more or look ...

Do you have any news about this bug?

Kind regards.

Chris-K should be able to help you, as my situation was exactly like yours (didn't play for several months) then had to factory reset. Trust his guidance, he helped me tremendously

That may be but it is not a solution from Oculus or Meta, which is what I am waiting for. I don’t want to go spend more money on a new cable for a fix I don’t know if I can do or might wreck my device even more. I won’t try this. Still waiting for the promised fix…..it’s only been 2 months. A monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type any given text.

Here`s what I did and it worked on a lot of other headsets too!

On your Quest:

- hold power button and volume down until logo appears

- factory reset

- hold power button and volume down until logo appears

- choose sideload update

- connect to pc

On your computer:

- install ADB Bridge

- download https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-XwU2uFh1O2MytV2w_kjhrBvoavq6kRy/view?usp=sharing

- don`t unzip it, just save it somewhere

- open console and type

- cd C:\PATH_TO_YOUR_ANDROID_FOLDER\Android\Sdk\platform-tools

- adb.exe

- adb sideload C:\PATH_TO_YOUR_ZIP

Then normally restart Quest, go through setup process and connect with your mobile oculus app!

That did it for me!

This reply above was already posted by me weeks back, but its origin stems back further, it also has a more detailed step by step set of instructions to help users.

Fix . I keep posting this, but due to the volume of messages it gets buried!

Have you tried this on the Quest 2?

As long as you have a PC and Cable you can probably upgrade it to V43....

I can assist via a zoom or online chat, all you need is to follow the numbered steps in the post on the above link, make sure you download the files in Step 1 and Step 5, and have a USB-A to USB-C cable or one that interfaces with the PC/MAC

I cant do iphone or android phones as you need as special cable and I dont have that or know how to do it.

I had the same trouble then came across this and tried it  it is simply using your phone as a wifi hotspot  and  pair the headset and it will update  as it is paired   here is a link https://www.ericwoodie.com/blog/how-to-force-update-oculus-quest-2-firmware-easy-way, and it worked for me , so I hope it helps someone ..
