Quest 3 stuck in Battery Saver Mode

So I toggled the battery saver mode 3 days ago and ofc it lowered resolution. I wanted to test the feature. So I toggled it on, saw the change, and then toggled it off. When I turned it off, the resolution stayed the same, the fovetated size stayed the same. Everything was the same as if I was still on battery saver mode (with full charge on the headset).

I ignored this issue until today as I cannot deal with it anymore. I restarted the device, resolution is still low, text is pixelated, FOV is terrible, everything warped. The headset thinks I'm in battery saver mode still. Tried toggling it on and off and there is literally no change when turning it on, and of course no change when going back to off.

Please help.

I'm on v60

**NOT A SOLUTION** MARKING FOR VISIBILITY**

Hey everyone! Engineers are currently looking into this and in the meantime, will need you to get connected with support using this link here. They will need to provide a few steps and possibly collect logs. As well as getting this escalated to our internal specialist through email. Our support will have the tools to get a better look into this for you! As well as submitting a bug report!

In addition, please get connected with our support through a PM by clicking their name MetaStoreHelp and making sure you're signed in.

[Also not a solution] - Simply for visibility

Hey everyone, just jumping in here to fill in for AliceinVRworld. Looks like our internal team is still currently looking into things and wants to suggest a few steps to try:

  1. Try to update your headset to PTC v69 or the latest version of V68
  2. Factory reset the headset (make sure cloud backup is on)

If you are still running into issues after, please continue to submit bug reports and provide us with the following:

  1. What's the full version number of your headset? (64.0.0.####### or likewise)
    1. Quick Settings > System > Software Update
  2. Troubleshooting already attempted (please feel free to list them out)

As soon as I have this info, I can bring it over to the team.

Thanks again!

So basically you’re saying they have no clue what so ever on how to fix this or one person is working on it for ten minutes a week

Factory reset 😂

Already on v69, problem still there. Should I try reset now (previous resets doesnt help)?

Hey Pieromix, I can confirm our team is still looking into things. They reached back out and it looks like they noted a few things.

They identified that the issue is not with the battery-saving mode feature. They also said it's worth mentioning that any changes made in battery saver mode will not revert back once it has been toggled off. Changes will only take place if you manually reset it before turning battery saver back on.

The engineers want to suggest another set of workarounds to make sure that we check every bit of troubleshooting for any possibility of resolution.

Since the issue started with battery saver mode as an initial root cause, it would be good to check if you can turn off battery saver mode and then manually adjust your graphics performance with the steps in this article here. Along with that, they stated there is a slim chance a factory reset through the mobile app could help since it did work for a handful of users who reached out.

Feel free to give those a shot and let me know how they work out!

Pretty sure this is being seen without being tethered to a computer. So not really sure why using the oculus app is really considered a workaround? Also, why is factory reset not restoring the headset back to exactly the way it came out of the box? That is probably the biggest problem out of everything, since at least if that were working people could reset and have everything working again as expected, while the toggle issue is investigated and fixed. But apparently not even factory reset is properly resetting this back to the out of box configuration, which is really concerning.

PCVR  doesnt permanently get the headset out of low power mode ten million people have already tried this

There are no troubleshooting steps left it’s stuck in power save  mode which you are supposed to be able to turn off with a toggle

get more staff on this bug that keeps making more and more headsets defective instead of trying to figure out how many virtual windows you can have open at once

And fix factory reset. There is no reason this isn't resetting the headset back to out of box configuration.

Something tells me this is going to be firmware related as the factory reset is not working.

Unfortunatly Meta can add me to the list. Took me a while to figure it out. Workaround in changing resolution via Sidequest aint good for me, as headset is getting warmer and frames are dropping a lot...

Any tips? Or should I go for replacement here as this seem to be ongoing too long already. Not keen on getting a refurbished, as we all know the product is very hard to repair...

I have made a video with PTC V69 showing Battery Save on and off (being switched off in game) and the image quality does not change at all.

I used Max Mustard, Tiger Blade and Asgards Wrath 2 as examples

Hopefuly more people can make videos to show people this problem actually exists!

Hi guys, I have a "big" update from my side that everyone will love and hate at the same time.

I recently unpacked a brand new headset bought from Amazon, no Meta refurbished scams, and I also have my supposedly bugged headset. Did a lot of tests between the two and guess what...

they are COMPLETELY the same.

Same passthrough quality, same horrible lines in virtual world and on most of the games, poor render for distant objects. Even Horizon Worlds has pixelated lines and menus in both headset.

When creating new boundaries the grid lines and floor lines have also stairs effects on the new headset (sometimes the stationary boundary circle is rendered good, very smooth, I don't know what's triggering that).

Soooo guys, after all this time being angry and chasing this problem that never had a fix, I'm letting go, because maybe is true that it doesn't exists and the sub-issue is just that the singular apps are not optimized for Quest 3 and the bad quality comes from that and not from the headset that is faulty or bugged, for sure it can be improved with updates tho.

Still weird that also Meta Horizon Worlds is not smoothly optimized for Quest 3. If we want a confirmation, please someone that "supposedly DOESN'T have this bug, send a video recorded from lenses of the environmental objects in the main menu platform of Horizon Worlds (that should be a pretty new developed app for Quest 3) also if you leave the main menu board floating and you go around it, there should be some black banners also very very bad rendered... let me know if all you is the same, because with the new headset is as bad as it looks.

Sadly, I think everyone is seeing the same bad quality, it's just that for someone is strange to accept that this can be the real rendering, and I was totally one of them.

Regarding the "no changes" of graphic when Power saving mode is toggled on and off, we actually don't have any comparison on "how it should be" with saver ON and saver OFF. This can mean that maybe the power saving is actually working on elements that we are actually not seeing clearly, like distance rendering, lower frame rate, less CPU GPU power and we don't even know if the power saver mode ON is taking place when lunching an app only or not.

If the support will give more details on how the Power Saver mode works and how can we verify if there's an actual way to see differences, we could maybe have the confirmation.

Honestly, I felt very bad seeing that both a new headset and that refurbished one I got from Meta have this quality, but on the other hand I feel a bit relieved for some reason.

Also guys, this justify the fact that this problem has not been fixed since almost the launch of the Quest 3, and let's be honest, is very hard to believe that no one worked on it and fixed it after all this time, because simply they've never found anything related to this story. It also explain the fact that no one is talking about it on YouTube as a real issue except for 2 videos and many reddit posts of people like us that can't believe that the Quest 3 has this poor antialiasing. Well, it probably has, and probably your headset is not faulty or affected by any bug.

Support, please gave us the details of how Power Saver mode precisely works so we can have the final answer to this nightmare once for all.

At the e.bd of the day it says it lowers graphics quality and it doesn’t at all., not things up close or thingsa in the distance and the textures look below HD in every game not just in nes that have not been optimised.

get your money back from amazon

I will make another video of the same games on quest 2 and 3 which have actually been optimised

My teenage son used the headset today and he troggled the power saving option (wanted more battery life) and viola low res and aa shimmering all over the homescreen. Did not know this was an issue until it happend and I googled it and it seems this is and ongoing issue.

How is this not resolved after so long?

Does the setting trigger and irrevesible hardware fault in the gpu/screen itself (could explain why the issue is not resolved).

Tried reset through app and on the headset itself same issue.

Passthrough not affected and no aa jaggines along the menu but as soon as I go into homescreen it's alot of aa jaggines and shimmering on the menu and windows alongside elements in the homescreen environment. The riverside homescreen is unusable with strong shimmering and jaggines (was my favorit one so i knew how it looked before power saving setting was troggled).

Did try the v69 PTC and reverted back to the V68 awaiting official v69 but it seems META have not cruched to bugg in the latest update.

Will have the headset replaced as I live in an EU country with stong customer service laws in place.

Will guide them to this tread aswell.

Poor kid, he's sad he put me through this trouble but it's not he's fault using a setting thats should revert to original settings just as easy as it's troggled.

Hey Poxycon. Thanks for reaching back out with this information. I'll get it over to our internal team. In the meantime can you record/upload a video and/or some photos that I can have them look over?
Along with that, they wanted to know which games were being played and roughly how long the playtime usually lasts. Lastly they wanted me to mention submitting a bug report as soon as the issue is noticed. This way it'll go straight to the engineering team for them to look over.

Thanks again!

The problem with saying something like this, is that it goes against what Meta's own release notes say for 59.0:

"

Battery Saver (Quest 3 only)

We’re adding an optional setting that will let you improve battery life on your device by lowering the graphics settings. You can find Battery Saver under Power in System Settings."

So if you are toggling the option, you SHOULD Be seeing a difference between when it is on and when it is off. That is exactly why the issue is still open, is that it seems to lower the performance, and then never restore it back to what it was before it was turned on.

Going on from bradley's reply above. You can see if you are running in low power mode by running Virtual Desktop, or any app that allows you to see the exact settings you are using, and bring up an on-screen display while using that app - for example, using Virtual Desktop, and running a PCVR Steam game, no matter my settings, the refresh rate was locked to 72hz, no matter what the Virtual Desktop settings were set to, 90hz, 120hz, etc... This confirmed to me that I was stuck in low power mode.

My personal fix was to get the Quest 3 into Developer mode, and use Sidequest to change my refresh rate to 120Hz, and this stuck to 120Hz when running Virtual Desktop, and brining up the on-screen info while running a PCVR game - it reported 120Hz. Whereas before, it reported 72Hz.

Also, just being in "Home", without running Sidequest, I can see the 72Hz flicker - it's not major, but it's noticeable. Run Sidequest, click 120Hz, and back in "Home" and you can instantly see the difference. I can also increase the resolution from the low power mode of something around 1750, to something higher than 2064x2208, and again it's really noticeable - everything is really crisp, sharp, and flicker free.

If we could find a way to make this persistent and not depend on the developers who seemingly abandoned us, I would be more than fine with using your solution.
