Quest 3 suddenly making repeated connect noises & won't recharge.

My Quest 3 is bricking itself right now..

TLDR version: Quest 3 suddenly repeatedly making connect sound, won't connect via Link Cable, and doesn't recharge, all after latest update.

Youtube (Short) Demonstration

Full Story:

After using my Q3 for PC Link gaming successfully last night (just before bedtime) I simply set the headset down with it still connected to my PC and recharging. I immediately noticed the light flashing on the headset so I put it to my face and saw that it was doing an update. I waited for that to finish, turned it back on just to confirm it was working ok (it was) then turned it off and went to bed.

Not long after I fell asleep I was awoken by the Q3 repeatedly playing the connect sound in a rapid continuous loop, which kept going even after turning the headset on. Being late at night I simply turned it off, unplugged the cable and went back to sleep.

This morning I've gone to check on it - the noise is still constantly happening once the Link Cable is plugged back in, my pc is constantly playing the hardware connect and disconnect sounds, and the headset won't charge at all.

I did a complete Factory Reset on the headset. I tried using a different Link Cable which I know works for charging. I tried powering the USB-C connection from both mains adaptor and directly from a wall socket. None of that has fixed the sound, connection and battery issues.

I don't know if it affected anything but yesterday I also followed some advice on here (from a Community Manager) to change OVRServer_x64.exe to Power Saving mode (I was trying to improve Link Cable connection success).

The connect noise stops only when I disconnect the Link Cable, and doesn't sound when using the Q3 in standalone mode. I've now just left the headset while it has some charge left in it, in the hopes it can be saved before the battery is completely dead.

Considering that this happened just after the very latest software update and while the headset wasn't even in use, I'm massively confused right now and would really appreciate some help please. Thanks.

So I received a new software update today from Meta for both the headset and PC program:

    Headset: v79.1032 - Build 5115411.14920.520 - Released 26th August 2025.

    Meta Quest Link: 79.0.0.1143.381 (79.0.0.1143.381)

These updates have seemingly now completely fixed all the Link Cable issues that I raised for this thread. I can charge the battery using the Link Cable both when the headset is in use and when not. There's no rapid connects & disconnects of power anymore. There's no need to literally connect and disconnect cables. Link works as it should.

Many thanks Meta for fixing this, even if the issue shouldn't have existed in the first place (perhaps consider some better QA testing in the future eh).

Might also be a good time to untick that receive updates box in the internal settings just to prevent future bricking.

I'm having the exact same issue as well. Mine worked fine the other day and went to use it on my sim this morning. Plugged the link cable into the pc and had constant connect/disconnect sounds. Updated all drivers, reinstalled link software and same issue. Had to be an update of some sort to cause this issue as I was having no problems Tuesday afternoon.

Many thanks for your comments. I thought I was going mad or something, but the problem obviously doesn't affect just me then.

Do you mind me asking, does yours sound / act like my Q3 in the short video I linked?

Either way, my Q3 still isn't charging anymore (now down to 30%) and it seems that the latest update is currently bricking my Q3 so this needs rectifying immediately.

Yep mine does the exact same thing as your video. I can't speak on it not charging as it was fully charged when I took it off and then put it back on charge after I couldn't get it to link. I feel like it's definitely something software related though.

Many thanks Choleni for your very kind help. It's sadly reassuring to see that many others are having the exact same problem.

I've completely read over both threads and will try the connection process methods, but only as a temporary measure as I'm not putting my gear through excessive wear & tear connecting and disconnecting everything every time I simply want to use something I've bought.

Therefore I'm not marking anything (at the moment) as a "solution", and if this isn't resolved within the next week or two I'm selling the Q3 and never returning to Meta ever again.

    Understandable.

It wasn't meant as a solution, just for information🙂

    One last update:

Disclaimer that I'm a bit late to this party as I've only just encountered this problem that's been affecting others for a good couple of weeks.

My Q3 can fully charge but only by using just the power cable, skipping the Link Cable out completely.

Link Cable works without "power injector" being used so I can have my normal wired connection but without any recharging.

I tried the linked instructions of starting everything up in a certain order, but when I attached the USB-C power to the Link Cable it interfered with the link (which had to be re-established) and still didn't allow for charging via the Link Cable.

So lots of swapping on the USB-C port between data and power is currently required so I might try and find an essentially sacrificial adaptor to save the port going bad due to excessive swapping.

Still very much sucks that I'm now time-limited as I'm disabled, house-bound, I often use the Q3 as a monitor for comfort reasons, and I also watch a film in a cinema app almost daily.

Please Meta, return our functionality at your earliest convenience, or at least tell us how we can do this ourselves. Anything is better than silence.

I have only found out about this bug last night when I experienced this exact thing. The INIU cable is really good and I was disappointed to see it doing this. I need to use VR a lot for the stuff I do and Meta really needs to push out an update that fixes this.

I've read that some with the official Link Cable are also experiencing the same issues, so it's nothing specific to the INIU cable, which I agree is a great cable.

I left my Reverb G2 because Microsoft just dropped WMR, and now Meta are bricking Quest 3's now (hopefully unintentionally though).

How can they not fix this right away, it was working fine before today's update, it's frustrating to have your headset screwed with when all was fine arrrg!! roll back the update!

I can get it to work with much pain, when it's going nuts the connect comes on repeatedly if you're fast enough to click it it works but unfortunately it doesn't charge even though it's plugged in

I personally wouldn't bother having the power plugged in then as all it's doing is messing with enabling Link while not charging anyway. God only knows what kind of possible detriment or even damage this malfunction with the electrical supply may have upon the battery / rest of the headset.

Also, from what I've also read, while we can apparently roll back an update, it's supposedly pointless as the moment the headset goes online it automatically updates to the latest version again. I saw something somewhere saying that a line of code can be put into the headset to block updating - but that's currently beyond me (for today). Might be worth looking into if / when Meta bring out a fixed update though.

better is staying at v78 and disable all auto updates from headset parameters, new update has many bugs as mentioned by many users

Reading about the issue in a couple of places some are starting to say it was intentional to favor the "kiwi" line of cable yatta yatta, I don't mind but "kiwi" doesn't make plug in charger cables just a long link cable to your PC which doesn't charge as you play... or not fast enough to keep it charged with the USB 3. Hopefuly this is just a rumor and Meta will honor it's custommers by fixing what they've messed with so we can enjoy our headset PAID DEARLY WITH OUR HARD EARNED CASH... I'm so frustrated...

Edit: Factory reset doesn't work, it reloads the latest software even if I clicked off all the updates places : ( just makes you reload all of your games

Let's say they don't want us to use those 3rd party cables and did that on purpose, just come out with a cable of your own FFS, playing flight sim and games like Elite dangerous for 2 hours max isn't long, not long at all, even with a friggin battery packs. I spent nights flying or playing games and I bought that hedset KNOWING that I was going to be able to play indefinitely and this CRAP happens WTF are they thinking? Frustration is growing

Yup, this essentially is "Denial of Service" via "Operational Disruption" regardless of 3rd party accessories being used. More specifically (if this act is intentional) this could be called a "Remote Blocking" which can cause "Hardware-Based Restrictions", but there's far too many legal and ethical considerations involved with such a matter to want to open that can of worms.

As I've heard a few (admittedly small amounts of) reports from Official Link Cable users that are also affected, that would debunk the 3rd party cable theory - providing those official cable reports are genuine and not planted purely to give false impression.

That though is (IMHO) all too speculative and unfounded to be considered as the most likely scenario here - for now. I still give benefit of the doubt - again for now. That said, the longer this issue goes on (with silence) then obviously the more suspicious this would seem & become.

Either way, yeah, had it not been for the Link Cable functionality I wouldn't have bought the Q3 as I use VR daily for gaming, cinema, and just as an alternative monitor for well over over 2 hours at a time (with short sensible breaks every now & again) so this "change" is clearly very significantly detrimental toward the products suitability as it was and still is sold for.

same here, i'm out of it but i've spend 5 months in depression not getting out of bed and my quest was 24/7 connected to the cable to let me work remotely on my PC in the other room. I'm seriously annoyed to have to put my power outlet in my bed just to power my headset for daily use.

I too have just discovered I'm suffering with the same problem using the INIU link cable. Charging fine on factory charger but constant connecting noise. I Googled it and found this post. Glad it's not just me but needs sorting!
