Question

Quest screen completely freezes (PCVR)

Alright, this is a lengthy one, so bare with me.

I've had my Quest 3 since September/October-ish of 2025 and have been using it with my PC via a link cable, and it was fantastic, I've been fascinated with VR since 2018 and after finally getting my first headset it had me hooked. However.

Several months ago now, I believe it was after an update in April or May? I started having issues, nothing crazy at first, a disconnect here and there but for the last 2 months it's been hard, never recovering image freezes. I thought it may be the headset or the USB port so I got it replaced since it was under warranty, didn't fix the problem. Tried replacing the cable, still freezes. Tried connecting to my PC via airlink, freezes. I've ran DDU's to re-install different drivers from before the issue, updated CPU chipsets, reinstalled the metalink app, underclocked my GPU, ran the Oculus diagnostic tool, temps are fine, even asked ChatGPT for help but to no avail.

I've gone as far as factory resetting my PC completely which also didn't help. I'm stuck on what else I can do, nothing appears in the event viewer or reliability monitor either which makes figuring this out a real pain. I think it's hardware related or just something software I just haven't got the brain to figure out, if anyone has ANY idea's I am welcome to hear them.

There is a thread on the OculusQuest reddit from a year ago of someone's headset doing something very similar, but their headset unfreezes every few seconds unlike mine, I've also tried everything in that thread.

Thanks for finding these! I've taken a look through them and will try what I can, as I mentioned above I've already ran a DDU and reinstalled older graphic drivers, I've tried 595.71 (March driver), 591.86 and 591.74 (both January drivers), it still happens. I'll try turning off the notifications as one of the posts mentioned, that would line up with the timing on the freezes being super random if it's just a notification out of nowhere causing it.

Another thing is a lot of these posts mention that they no longer have the freeze when using airlink, Virtual Desktop etc, I've tried airlink and it still freezes, and unfortunately I don't have access to Virtual Desktop, don't have a 5ghz connection to try it anyway.

Ok, quick update after trying a few things.
I've turned off all notifications, I tried turning on the PTC for the app, and it worked for about 2 hours before dying again. It was a little different though, rather than completely locking up it just lost the ability to track my hands and head movement (again never recovered though), the home button on the controller still functioned normally and the game was still running on my PC just fine.

It's not a cable issue since it freezes on airlink too, it's definitely my PC but I don't know what exactly, if anyone has any ideas what it could be lemme know!

don't have a 5ghz connection to try it anyway

Well, that's why AirLink doesn't work.

Airlink does work over a 2.4ghz connection actually, not very well mind but it's more than enough to use browsers and social tabs, just not games. I wasn't trying to run games on it afterall I just wanted to see if it would freeze up like it did with cable, which it did.

nlg, i have the same problem, but mine's a bit different, i can connect my oculus to PCVR but it doesn't work with USB3, only USB2 and Airlink, tried everything, clean windows reinstall, BIOS tinkering, meta reinstall, quest factory reset, nothing has worked and my headset if connected via USB it detects software version 0, i can only play if im connected via USB2, which we know is not optimal, but it happened from one day to the next

i've always played with USB3 normally up until last month, it's been gruesome and nothing works, too bad im in MX

So, it's not the same problem then 🙄🤦‍♂️. You have a bad usb port or cable.

Edit: there you go, I diagnosed correctly:
