[Resolved] - Quest 3 Elite Strap with Battery only connects for a few seconds

Is anyone working on the Quest 3 elite battery issue?  It charges but won’t connect to the headset for more than a few seconds, meaning you cannot charge through the back port.

We’ve seen some people having trouble with their Meta Quest 3 Elite Strap with Battery not being recognized by the headset or not charging. We’re happy to help look into this with anyone having trouble, and we recommend contacting our support team here so we can take a closer look.

Ok, I did the stupid thing, and I do not suggest anyone else try this, as the cold and/or condensation could damage the battery or electronics, and if the battery has actually been deep-discharged, it's probably unsafe to "revive" it.

But out of curiosity, and because it was a quick, non-invasive experiment, I removed my battery strap from the headset and it put it in the freezer for an hour. When I took it out, to my surprise, it connected, disconnected, connected again, and stayed there. But the extended battery now read 0%. So I'm thinking the 100% that would briefly flash there before may actually have been a lie, and maybe like was speculated earlier, it was dead all along. (It doesn't take much juice to turn on a tiny LED)

I plugged it into the charger and it's currently flashing alternating green/orange, which I think is an error. I'm hoping that's just a "too cold to charge" situation, and I'm crossing my fingers that it will warm up, start charging, and work again. But at the very least, this is different from what it did before, and it's an interesting data point. I'll report back after it warms up.

Again, please do not try this at home. I was willing to sacrifice mine and have to buy a new one if I got unlucky.

No such luck, I'm afraid.

Shortly after posting my previous message, the light went from green/orange to solid green (which I think indicates it thinks it's fully charged). And along with that, the exact same old problem came back. When connected to the headset, it briefly shows it's at 100% and then it disconnects.

So my revised theory is that the battery strap is indeed fully charged. It was only misbehaving because it was too cold. I didn't manage to trick it or reset it or get away with anything, I only temporarily caused it to be unable to get any juice out of its batteries.

I'm going to stop posting noise to this thread and go back to trying to patiently wait for an official software or hardware fix, because I'm fairly convinced now that there's nothing we can do on our own.

Me too.  Customer Service is a joke with Meta.

Just want to throw my hat in the ring.  I waited a month before grabbing the strap w/ battery, that 2 hours and the comfort was just worth it, even though vastly overpriced.

Worked for 2 days.

Now, it comes on if I reset or unplug replug, shows extended battery at 100%, but then it just shuts off immediately.

Very frustrated rn, not sure if I need to open a ticket or not for a replacement, seems like a recall is imminent.

Return it for money back if you can. If not then replace it and sell the replacement as brand new in the box to get as much back as you can.

Support still wanting to issue replacements and will not refund. $206 CAD tied up in this disaster. Feels bad. Class action incoming.

So.  I have been using my Quest 3 with elite strap now and how I do it is that I charge the headset and elite strap individually. The problem is that the elite strap will only charge up to 69%.   When I boot up the headset I connect the Elite strap and the power will drain the elite strap first then go to drain the headset battery. But if I do not dissconnect the Elite strap battery when it is on 0% it will start to steal charge from the headset! I noticed when I checked it went from 0% to 2% on my elite strap battery when playing.  And also when the headset is powered down I have to dissconnect the elite strap, otherwise it will drain headset battery even when turned off.

So according to https://www.reddit.com/r/Quest3/comments/181j0kj/fyi_recall_on_quest_3_elite_strap_with_battery/ and a few other threads (just Google "quest 3 battery strap recall"), it does seem like at lest Best Buy's computers have this thing officially listed as recalled. I think that's a good sign, because it means it's not just out of stock, they have actually told the stores to stop selling them even if they're still on the shelves. That's more of a concrete indication that they're aware there's a major problem and are working on it.

I am past the return date from the point of sale, and Meta refuses to refund me. This is going to get very bad very soon for Meta.

I have the issue where unplugging and re-plugging the Battery Strap cable to the Quest 3 resolves the issue for a time: until I have to do it again that is.  The battery (once recognized) charges to 100% and works as intended.

So far, I haven't had the battery totally not work or charge.

I currently have another, different Battery Strap on order from Amazon that CAN charge the Quest 3 while in use.  It's 8000mAh which still will not be enough for the Quest 3.

With the Elite Battery Strap, I've gotten into the habit of checking the status of the Extended battery at key points that insure it is being used and that it will get charged on the dock.  If any check fails, I have to unplug/re-plug the cable.

=================================================================

Normal Operation – using charging dock:

Power ON

  • Remove Headset from the dock, press Quest 3 Power Button once – screen comes on and shows Quest 3 Battery % and Extended Battery %
  • Press and hold Quest 3 Power Button down for 6 seconds – system powers on.
  • Main screen, hovering cursor of headset icon shows percentages of both batteries in a pop out ‘balloon’.  The percentage on the screen without hovering over it shows the OVERALL calculated percentage of both batteries combined.

Power OFF

  • Shutdown via voice or Power Button hold.
  • Screen should go off and come back on briefly to show Quest 3 Battery % and Extended Battery % and then go off for good.
  • Place on dock: dock LED for headset should be solid orange, LED on headset should be solid orange and LED on Battery Strap should be solid orange without pressing the button on it (important – if it’s not on, it’s battery will NOT get charged).

If ANY of the above doesn’t happen or happens differently, unplug and re-plug the cable from the Battery Strap to the Quest 3 Headset for all of the following:

Power ON

  • If you remove the headset from the dock and pressing the Quest 3 Power Button once does nothing, unplug and re-plug the cable.  It’s important to check the power LED’s when placing the Headset onto the Dock: it particular the Battery Strap’s LED – see Power OFF below as the Extended battery may show less than 100% or whatever percentage it was at when placed onto the Dock and not charged.
  • With the system on, if the main screen’s headset icon is different and/or hovering the cursor over the icon only shows the Quest 3’s battery %.  Unfortunately, have to suggest checking this before and after playing each game/app.  For long play sessions, suggest pausing and checking again.  Sucks but can save from having the Headset Battery discharge early/completely.  Each time mentioned above, the cable must be unplugged and re-plugged.

Power OFF

  • If the Headset shuts down and immediately comes back on and returns to the main screen, unplug/re-plug the cable and then shut it down again until it doesn’t come back on.  Repeat as necessary.
  • If the screen doesn’t come back briefly to show Quest 3 Battery % and Extended Battery %, unplug/re-plug the cable.
  • If ALL 3 of the Power LED indicators mentioned above, do not come on when the Headset is placed on the dock: unplug/re-plug the cable and check that the Status LED on the Battery Strap is solid Orange or it will NOT be charged.  It should briefly be solid, Orange immediately upon placing the Headset onto the Dock without pressing the button on the Battery Strap.  After a few seconds, it will go out/off – this is normal for this status LED.

What's the problem? Meta don't have money to pay employers that know how electricity works?
