[UNRESOLVED as of May 30, 2024] - Quest 3 Controller Tracking Issues

update May 30, 2024: There have been no updates/improvements to controller tracking since Meta Support marked this as solved! Community consensus seems to be that this issue stems from hardware/software limitations with the controllers, specifically the method of tracking (as a software developer working specifically in the machine learning and computer vision space, I agree that this technology is not particularly robust enough to handle some types of movement). If you play games that require fast hand movements and/or dynamic hand positioning, I would recommend not buying a Quest 3, unfortunately. I've heard some anecdotes regarding improved tracking with the Quest Pro controllers, but the improvements are marginal at best - not worth the additional ~$300 for minimal performance gains IMO. My personal recommendation is to stick to Quest 2. Not to detract from the various improvements that the Quest 3 has brought (e.g., color passthrough w/higher resolution, better hand tracking, higher overall hardware specs compared to Quest 2, etc.), but Quest 2 controller tracking is significantly better than the Quest 3's. Ideally, my hope is that Meta will push an update that allows for pairing Quest 2 controllers with the Quest 3, but as of right now, that's just a pipe dream as Meta has given no indication of making these headsets/controllers backwards compatible. While I'm (naively) hopeful that things will change, realistically speaking, I have 0 expectations and a lot of disappointment.

tl;dr: I've had a Quest 2 for almost 3 years. I received my Quest 3 today and was very excited to use it. Controller tracking performance is much worse than the Quest 2, at least in the context of games where you swing your arms as fast as you can. This was not a problem for the Quest 2 (unless controllers were physically damaged, e.g., hitting a wall, dropping them, etc.). Don't buy if you play games like Gorilla Tag, Beat Saber, Synth Riders, or any of the other games mentioned throughout this thread!!!

Question:
Are there ways to modify the Quest 3's controller tracking such that fast hand movements won't be affected by the prediction-like behavior where the in-game hand moves farther than you swing? When I perform a baseball throwing movement with my hand/arm, the tracking will not keep up and it ends up losing my hand's position for a fraction of a second, causing my in-game hand to be positioned farther away than my hand actually is (this is not an issue with Quest 2 controller tracking).

Details/Context:
I primarily use VR for exercise, and I mostly play Gorilla Tag. Gorilla Tag is a game where you play as the upper half of a gorilla, using your arms as your means of locomotion. Basically, you use your arms as if they were your legs, and you can run, climb trees, wall-run, etc. It's an infection-based tagging game where you join a lobby of up to 9 other people, and the game will randomly select a player to be the first tagger. The tagger(s) will continue tagging until everyone in the lobby has been tagged (infection-style), and then a random player will be selected as first tagger; this pattern just continuously repeats.

While the learning curve is pretty steep to play at a high level, there is a growing community of players who are very competitive (approx. 10-20k players based on the communities I participate in - Competitive Gorilla Tag on Discord and Gorilla Tag Competitive on Discord). As a prominent member of this community, people have been seeking my feedback on whether or not the Quest 3 is worth it. While I feel that a majority of the new features are amazing, I have had issues with the controller tracking.

Gorilla Tag is an active game where you're constantly swinging your arms as fast as you can to travel around the map(s) to avoid being tagged. The primary player base for the game is Quest 2 users. Aside from physical damage, most players have not had any problems with controller tracking on the Quest 2, aside from when the controller goes out of the tracking range of the headset (as expected).

However, the Quest 3 controllers lose tracking during medium-fast to fast hand movement (medium-fast: like playing catch with a friend; fast: throwing a baseball as hard as you can). The consequence of this in the context of Gorilla Tag is that your in-game arm extends to the game's max arm length frequently, causing your hand to collide with the wall/tree/ground and launch you away from the surface. This is a big issue for games/activities involving fast-paced hand movement as it's not nearly as reliable as the Quest 2 controller tracking performance.

Hey everyone, I've connected with the team and they are actively investigating tracking issues like you've mentioned. We'll be working to improve performance, especially for competitive players in games like Gorilla Tag, Supernatural, IB Cricket, and Eleven Table Tennis. We expect to roll some of these improvements in the upcoming releases.

Yes i never had this problem over years with my q2... and now i own two quest 3 and both of thema have the same issue... i now ned to return all for exchanging. But iam affraid that nothing will change... its not only 1 game... its in les mills... audio tripp.... eleven... beat saber and and and.. in much games its 1 from 10 hits with the 3second vibration fail... other games its about 3 to 5 hit s in 1000 hits... i cannot forget it ans wait every time i play for the issue... its very dissssapointing...

I have had this issue for a while and Meta support even changed my headset. Please go back in the thread and read my messages.

Unfortunately, I have bad news for you - it is a fundamental flaw in design of Q3 controllers. They do not track as well as Q2 due to limited number of LEDs inside them and instead rely on AI.

You can either try and live with it (make motions that make it so your controller stays within sight of headset and possibly not make super fast motions) or consider getting Pro controllers (that themselves have issues of different nature).

I have kinda adapted to my issue (I play Eleven Table Tennis) but, even so, I often have issues with lost tracking which results in my racket going funny in the game and missing the shot eventually.

Try and minimise a chance for the controller to lose tracking by making sure you adapt your motions (no wide spread motions) as well as making sure the lighting is good.

I know it sucks but that's the reality and no headset swap will fix it for you unless you adapt.

I have now over 10 mails with meta and no rma number..

Every time is other person in support and everyone has other ideas and steps to but all end with the same...

I have been playing beatsaber for the past few weeks with my new pro controllers on the quest 3 and they still work really great (as opposed to the stock default ones) --- However, in the past week, I have also noticed that "3 second vibration" occurring... a google search didnt return any definitive info on the subject...
Anyone know for certain why the controller will randomly vibrate non stop for around 3 seconds?
It does not seem to affect the tracking even at fast speed I still do not miss any notes while it occurs... but it is distracting for certain...

Naysy mentioned in a video that the Q3 seems to have an odd glitch where pairing a fresh pair of controllers had the haptics freaking out. And that deleting them repairing then seemed to solve it.

Have you tried this?

Don't mind me. Just browsing around because I pretty much only have a Q2 to play Beat Saber. Was really tempted to go ham and get a Q3 for the better visuals, but not if there's no saving the controls.

Would you say the pro controllers at least put it on par with the Q2? My only peave with the Q2 is back tracking. I had hoped a Q3 would do the same or better and would even splash for the pro controllers if it's better?

Hate to reply to myself, but...

Went to the actual Meta store last week. Tried a song I know on Q3. It... Actually seemed ok. Compared to playing Q2 for years.

But. Read to the end...

I still picked up a set of pro controllers which is what I really went there for. They don't have them on display, but they're for sale there.

Got home, tried on Q2 and yes, they really track behind the back and head. They didn't magically make me better, but I didn't have to play with trex arms either.

Because I'm apparently crazy, I had gotten a Q3 too.

Within 30 seconds of the same map at home I was missing what felt like a quarter of the notes and failed with the Q3. Well lit living room. Huh? Tried again, same result. Fail. To be fair, I didn't adjust my sabers but it felt so far off?

Switched the Q3 to the Pro controllers immediately. S rank first try. Felt no better or worse than the Q2, though I'm not an E+, so I might not notice very small latency. They tracked smoothly though.

This is obviously not a solution all can afford (and pro controllers aren't 3S compatible?), and I'll try again with Q3 controllers. But the pro ones feel like magic for self tracking and play fine.

I'm very puzzled why the one at the Meta store seemed ok.

Yes i cant not understand why they cannot deactivate this crappy 3 second buzzing bug... i found a tone of forum entry with the same error... and now i have to exchange both q3... and iam thinking this will also nothinh change..

Or has someone good experience with exchsnging?

The vibrating for 3 sec is really annoying a can live with some hits which dont buzz but now i have games where it happens als 10 seconds... and i use it only for hard training which means fast movement... i dont pay 500 doller to play like my grandmother. And i dont change the way i play... i played this way over years with my q 2... i send it back until i get my money back or they have a patch for this problem....

The audacity to answer "Glad to know that your issue have been sorted" ignoring entire walls of text spread on 50 pages of people complaining. You should work in a circus.

I have seen videos of people who had a ton of issues and all got magically fixed by a reformat... i'm starting to be very tempted to do it even if its still nearly brand new from only a month and a half... I wonder if the batman savefiles are stored on the cloud account since its the only thing i actually have installed ON the device itself...

The better I get in beatsaber the more often the 3sec vibrating occurs... i freakin paid 400 extra dollars (on top of the 800CAD for the Q3 itself) to get the pro controllers in order to no longer have issues (because the regular quest 3 controllers were barely usable at high speed) back then i was at around 3 notes per second... i am closing in on 5 nps now and the problems are occuring more and more often... i wonder if the Quest is simply not good enough for fast speed movement... most professional places suggest using vive or index with a big camera setup to make sure you get perfect tracking at all time... VR is really an expensive hobby... 😞

I have the same problems on the Quest3 with slow movements that we are needed for assistants of a measuring device. This needs really accurate tracking also for slow movements so that the measuring data can be evaluated together with movement data.

I hope there will be a patch for this issue. Otherwise we might replace the hardware. It works with slow movement on QuestPro but we are having tracking drifts on that device.

If anyone figured out a workaround, please let us all now. 🙂

I've been as big a critic throughout this thread as any, but it might not be possible to make the Quest 2 controllers work with the Quest 3. The Q3 uses the new (bad) inside-out tracking system that relies on specific sensors and the "guessing" algorithms for when it loses tracking, which is where we've seen the problems occur. The Q2 controllers use a different tracking system that may not align with the tracking hardware and algorithms of the Quest 3.

Add in the physical design and hardware differences, and it is quite likely impossible. Boz made a bad, stupid bet on algorithmic guessing for the Q3 tracking, which is a real shame. Hopefully they fix this nonsense in the Q4. I'd be perfectly happy with bringing back the tracking rings!

This is what infuriates me most. That Boz idiot has various posts on his X account where he boasts the AI prediction  yapping about the extreme accuracy and realibly wording it "it's so goooood".

This is what we have now.
Q2 controller not available because different tech? Ok! Change Q3 controllers including cameras or whatever is needed, since Quest pro controller seems to solve the issue but cost like a new headset and give them to who is having this problem.

Costy? Who cares, you sold a defective product in the first place.
Not complying? Ok, this will lead only to me spreading this post all around the quest communities like I'm already doing and doing all the worst word of mouth possible about meta and his products.
I'm not getting for sure those 400$ controllers or a fix for this, but they are losing for sure much more headset sales.

I might get a blunt experience for my product and they're loosing hundreds in sales for being unprofessional and careless.

Word of mouth gets far and I've already convinced 12 friends to go on a Pico and ditch Quest, plus I advertised this post everywhere and for sure someone didn't buy a quest for this.

I doubt it's algorithm only... probably a mix of both including hardware... however, the good news is that any algo can be upgraded with time, research and patches... so they could pass some firmware update that improves it in theory without replacing the hardware 🙂

If you read back earlier in the thread, I included links to where Boz (Meta's CTO) was quoted, talking about how they're using "A.I." nonsense to guestimate tracking when its lost. This was never a problem with the Q2, because of the tracking rings.
