Question

v74: Quest 3 not fully charging

My Quest 3 auto-updated to V74 Build 5070966.11190.510 (PTC) on the 31st and it won't charge past 73-74%. At that percentage, the orange charging light starts to flash. This one time I woke up to the quest turned on and in the factory reset menu by itself (the one you get from holding Power + Vol down), with it overheating.

In the settings, there are no updates but whenever I restart or shut down the quest, each time it says wait while the Quest is updating for maybe 2s, which is unusual.

Things I've already tried:

1. Soft/hard reboot.

2. Different cables/chargers.

3. Unpairing and repairing the controllers (as suggested by chat support)

4. Turning off the Quest and then charging it but the same issue persists

I'm on v76 and still having the issue. What fixed it for you?

Charging seems to be an issue, though I'm not sure if it isn't my 2-3 year old Quest 2 battery.

Takes forever to get to 100% and many times as soon as I unplug the charger when it says 100% it immediatly drops down to 97% or 74%.

I'd hate to go through the expense and effort to replace my battery only to find out it is a firmware issue.

So, mine started behaving again after 76 I believe? I did a full factory reset with no change, then just left it on the dock while I was tied up with work life for a few days and then I noticed it was all green.

I've been using it off and on and again it seems to take longer to charge back to 100% but at least it does again.  Not sure why/how or if it'll do it again after another update but for now, I'm back in business when I get the chance to play with my Quest 3.

Is the headset on standby when you charge it?
Noticed that, when you shut it down the charging stops at 75%, when you run it the charge stops at 75% and drops to 75% over time while using it but charges up to 100% when in standby.

I use bobovr's B100 batteries which uses qualcomm quck charge modes.(8-20V up to 20W)
I had the same behavior as mentioned above, when I still used the B2 batteries which allowed only 5V 2A charging.

So my idea is, that quck charging somehow is faulty now.
Or limited by the headset cause of battery degradation?

In the end, I had to get a refurbished unit from Meta. I did get it for free, though. Nothing would fix the charging issue, not even v77.

I'm glad I did because the new headset has no problems connecting to my WiFi 7's 6GHz band, like the defective unit was also having.

Meta wants me to send them mine as the issue started for me with v76 and they told me that it should have been fixed in v76 so they want to look at the unit to figure out why. They said once they receive my unit they will send me a replacement unit.

I´m currently on V77.1027 and the charging seems to partially solved.
When I turn of my headset and attach a usb charger, the headset comes on again , but only until the battery symbol is shown.(This is how it behaved before the problems began)
And my headset is charged to 100% again.

When running the headset with a charger it still will drop to 72-75% over time and stay there.
But I´m fine with this. Maybe this will help keeping the battery a bit healthier (not being charged to full 100% all of its lifetime).I also have the feeling my b100 from bobo last longer now.

But how did I get here?
I don`t know. My headset was updated from V74 to V77.1026 without a fix over a long time.
Then factory reset to V77.1025, then automatically updated to V77.1027.
Days later automatically downgraded to V77.1026 again.

Then without a update my MetaOS started to behave differently in the UI without an update.
Yesterday it updated again to V77.1027 and and behold the charging is fixed (with the restrictions above)

Hope it will stay this way.

I've read a lot of these comments and this has been going on since February????

It's freaking June and after "support" telling me to factory reset, Im pissed off that it was for nothing. These updates are garbage. They cause issues all the time. Now I have to figure out how to get the last update off. This is beyond annoying.

Went through the problem with meta today, they told me to reboot and then to do a factory reset..

Still will not charge past 75% and the battery seems to die quicker too, quest 3 on v77

    Hi,

I've had exatly the same issue and customer care told me is not a firmware bug. It is an hardware issue (if you put on the headset switched off in a complete dark room you may notice that the video blinks during the charging).

They do a replacement of the headset and now it charges again with no issue (this from firmware 72, 74 and 77).

    Hope this will help you.

If this is a software bug, why hasn't it been fixed yet?

If this is a hardware bug, why did it appear after more than a year of active use of the headset?

Updated from v76 to v77 and then v78 . Reflashed v78 with data clearing. No changes.

    very much right.

if this is a hardware bug, why did it appear so suddenly and on so many headsets at once ?

this is very hard for us that's not on countries that's supported by meta. It would be too costly. And if I want to sell it, the price would drop a lot as it would be seen as a defective product.
it's been the 2nd time meta break my headset. the 1st time was with quest 2, it bricked while updating. I had to send it to meta, and it cost about 60% of the product to send it there and get it back (with the import taxes too). just add a bit of money and I could buy used one like new and not having to wait a long time and the hassle of sending it back and forth. Wouldnt do it again now.

this should be a software one, but they just dont know or too lazy to find the cause and solution.

I should think better next time to buy a product from meta.
