Question

V78.1028 failed to install on Quest 3s

V78.1028 has appeared on my Quest 3s today. However after 3 attempts to install it,where it says successfully installed and restart, the update still appears asking to be installed. Anyone else have this issue ? Is it a general problem?

https://www.meta.com/en-gb/help/quest/172903867975450/

Week of June 30 update on the page is version number v77.1029

and the one before that is v78 june 16

I have been waiting for an update that fixes the problem of my Quest2 not fully charging stops at 78% been an issue for a while now. But the way these updates are going I am not holding out much hope.

Same problem with my Quest 3, as reported last week.

I'm noticing some irregularities in the numbering of the releases.

Meta Quest release notes | Quest help | Meta Store

Maybe not the source of the problem, but is definitely confusing.

Week of June 30, 2025 - Meta Quest build 77.1029  - 77 not 78

Week of June 16, 2025 - Meta Quest build 78.0 - 78 but no .nnnn following

Week of June 16, 2025 - Meta Quest build 77.1028 - 77 not 78, but 78 in my Quest 3.

Week of 2 June 2025 - Meta Quest build 76.1027 - 76 not 78

Week of May 19, 2025 - Meta Quest build 77.0 - 77 not 78

Week of May 19, 2025 - Meta Quest build 76.1026 - 76 not 78, but 78 in my Quest 3.

The problem may be that

  1. 76.1026 was originally released as 78.1026,
  2. And then 77.1028 was released as 78.1028,
  3. Which is preventing anything less than 78.1026 from downloading.
  4. Leading to 77.1028 trying to load in after it's successor 76.1026.

In any regard, it would be helpful if Meta:

a. Acknowledged that there is a problem.

b. Indicated the status of diagnosing the problem

c. Indicated an Estimated Time to Fix / Resolve the problem.

Luckily for me, my Quest 3 operations doesn't appear to be effected, outside of the upgrade loop.

I have sent this screenshot to support and they still asked me what build it try to install versus the one I have currently.....what's wrong with them ?    It will take them at least a month until they get it 🤯🧠.

Not that hard , it tries to install an update that I already have over and over

Problems there may be obvios, but in retail channel?

If it was PTC, they'd have an excuse but it's not. Ridiculous.

I got another **bleep** stupid reply from support this morning.

Here it is.

This is JayEm, from Meta Store Support.

Thank you for your patience while we investigate your case with our dedicated team. Please rest assured that we are here to assist you every step of the way.

I wanted to share an update regarding your issue. It’s important to note that not all users are experiencing software update issues with V78.1028. The rollout of software updates typically follows a phased approach, where updates are first made available to a subset of users before a broader release.

Several factors can influence whether a headset is eligible for the update, including:

  1. Device Type and Model: Different device models or types might receive updates at different times.
  2. Region and Location: Updates might be rolled out in specific regions or countries before becoming available globally.
  3. Account Type: Some accounts, such as developer or enterprise accounts, might have access to updates before consumer accounts.
  4. Previous Software Version: Headsets running older software versions might need to install intermediate updates before they can upgrade to V78.1028.
  5. Network Connection: A stable internet connection is required to download and install the update.

To check if the update is available for your headset, please follow these steps:

  1. Wear your headset and navigate to the home screen.
  2. Select "Settings" from the menu.
  3. Scroll down to "System" or "About" (based on your device model).
  4. Look for the "Software Update" option.
  5. If an update is available, select it to initiate the download and installation process.

In the meantime, you may also consider trying to manually update the software on your device. Instructions can be found [here]. Since the rollout does not occur simultaneously for all users, we encourage you to remain patient while awaiting the update for your device.

I think I figured out how you can at least get rid of the stuck update and it looks like the 1028 is withdrawn now:

Go back into Settings → Update

  • You should see a new update 1028 available. Start it and let the download begin (this step is important — the following steps won’t work otherwise).
  • Then force shut down the Quest (hold the power button until it turns off).
  • Restart the Quest to get into the boot menu (hold POWER + VOLUME DOWN, and release only the power button once the boot menu appears)
  • In the boot menu, navigate to "Restart" using the volume buttons. Select it with the power button → Quest will reboot.

Now, you should:
a) see that you're up to date, and
b) that the one-time reboot issue during startup is gone.

It will stay on your most recently installed version for now. On one of the Quests, it was able to install 1028; on the other, it's still 1027.

Let me know if it worked for you!

I noticed the size of the update file has changed to 105Mb, so I just tried updating again and it "worked", but it still says I'm on v78.1027 but now I am "up to date". So at least the update loop has gone.
