I just took a look at that registry value and found that my 64 bit system was using the Oculus runtime, but it was set to use the 32 bit runtime by default. I'll be editing that registry to use the 64 bit version instead. Thank you!

For anyone reading: running a 32 bit version of a program on your 64 bit processor can be slower than if you just use the 64 bit version. That's why I'm changing it.

When I was using PC with admin account, everyhing worked fine, but after switching to Windows 11 I decided to use limited user account to make my pc a little bit secure. So OpenXR Runtime setting as default function doesn't work on limited user account. Today i logged in as admin, logged to oculus account and set OpenXR as default, after that returning to limited user account everything was set correctly.

I have different problem with my Oculus Rift S. In Windows 10 desktop mode worked fine, but now in Windows 11 i can't see mouse coursor, can't close, minimize windows with touch controllers or run apps.  Is this somehow connected with this topic's issue?

This is a cop out answer that has yet to be answered. I'm now having the same problem and I'm still on Windows 10.

Pushing the button to set Oculus as active OpenXR runtime does nothing. I even went as far as to edit the registry with a suggested edit but with no luck as well.

We need more suggestions or some type of software fix for these problems.

I'm still having the same problem- no matter what I do I cannot get Oculus to be set as the default OpenXR runtime

You can still manually change the registry key with regedit to force Oculus runtime, even if the app still tells you the contrary.

Shame the support still does not confirm and bring the bug to Oculus dev team (or at least tells us they are working on to fix this).

We had the same issue on our student computers in a vr workshop. It seems the problem occurred after installing the Oculus app from the student user account. Even if you install as admin – if it was made out of the student account it was not possible to activate openxr runtime. We solved it by logging in to the admin account and repair the app with the installer. Now it's running in the student account too.

I made a post to confirm how to get it working. It screws up if Mixed Reality / Steam take over the registry value.

I think I had to run the app installer and choose "repair" then I got my headset working again

I'm not sure why it was chosen to use a registry for OpenXR configurations. Should be able to detect and switch over between Oculus, Steam VR, Mixed reality easy. As soon as I installed the mixed reality simulator it broke my headset because of the Kronos registry thing

I made a Tool which automatically detects installed OpenXR Runtimes, allows you to switch between them & add custom ones. This will do the needed Registry Edits for you: WaGi-Coding/OpenXR-Runtime-Switcher

Hope it helps someone 🙂

This is a bug in the Oculus software.

However, there are several things going on at once. First of all the registry key that needs to be updated requires Admin rights to update. As mentioned elsewhere using a Registry editor (as Admin) visit

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1

and update

ActiveRuntime

to

C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json

However, the Oculus software will then show "None" as the active software. This is because it incorrectly looks at the old location for this data in the registry

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Khronos\OpenXR\1

so if you want the Oculus software to correctly show it has been set as well then you need to duplicate the ActiveRuntime registry setting in that old and incorrect location as well. At least until the software gets updated and points to the correct location again.

Hope that helps.

I registered here just to thank antgiant, because apparently this forum software has no way for the moderators to "call out" an answer, or they don't care to.

For anyone still having the problem, keep in mind:
  • You have to run regedit as administrator.
  • You have to change TWO registry keys. (changing one might work for PC apps but the software will still complain)
  • You have to create the keys if you don't have them.
  • Changing registry settings can break your windows install. You should not edit your registry if you don't know what you're doing.
  • This is a bug that Oculus should fix.
  • As ridiculously boilerplate as the community manager's answer might appear to be, reinstalling the software and doing a reset could help if it clears Oculus registry settings. I didn't try.

Thanks again antgiant.

It worked for me. Thanks antgiant

So go inside the below directory in Registry (if you do not have it, create it):

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Khronos\OpenXR\1

Then create a string value like below:

Quit and open the Oculus app again. It will not show you the blue bar message anymore.

[PROBLEM UNRESOLVED] I am trying to connect my Quest 2 headset to my Unity editor so that I can rapid test my apps throughout various stages in development. However, it is not connecting and does not seem to run via Quest link. I think my roadblock is that I cannot activate the "set my oculus as active" feature on my Oculus portal. I have a video demonstrating this problem here: https://youtu.be/c5zleDI-EIg

Hiya itsjoopark ! If you're having troubles with Unity, I recommend posting on the Developer part of the forums for some extra insight. There's a Unity VR board here!
