Hey everyone! The engineering team has been reading feedback and doing some testing on this topic. We've found that the most common cause of any passthrough noise or unexpected quality is due to the amount of lighting in the room. To get the best experience with passthrough, check out our article here.

The team is still interested in everyone's feedback and will continue to analyze passthrough performance.

I have also been quite underwhelmed by the poor camera quality on the quest 3. The resolution is far lower than I was expecting given the current state of phone camera technology.  The exposure is really bad, and clips color to compensate. The visual warping is something that developers could have addressed, maybe with a minimum depth threshold. I also think that they could have used an up-scaler to improve the camera on the software side. In the short term, they should allow users to control their passthrough camera exposure, and have the option to disable auto-compensation until they can polish this to be more suitable.  The only decent video I have seen of the passthrough cameras is when people have LED light panels / ring lights in their room to help with the exposure, but this could have been done much better.

A little tip though for people having a hard time reading their phone, set your phone brightness to it's lowest setting, it will at least let you be able to kind of make out the text on your phone. The resolution is still very bad though.

I don't think it has to do with the poor camera quality, the MR capture is very clear but when seeing it live in the headset it is grainy and blurry, as for the cameras they are 4mp each , don't forget how close the monitors are to your eyes and the size of the small dual monitors, I think the dual monitors can support the 4mp cameras,  I think they are  sufficient for the resolution, I have the same issues as well when it comes to Q3 MR, blurry and distorted,  I feel a possible fix can be a software update to translate the image through the lenses.

My theory is that the image displayed trough the Lenses lacks any form of postprocessing based on how the screen capture is always less grainy and less blooming than the live footage,

even when played back in the headset media gallery

for example: video👇 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k6xAr3XG2M13i1xY7WTosaSFYca_3rBR/view?usp=drivesdk

When I was capturing this the phone was unreadable bloomy mess in the live feed and background graininess was not much better than inside the house but in the playback you can see text about as clearly as on the promotional materials.

Well I have been following certain youtube VR channels and what I do not understand that they have been using the pass through from units they got from Meta and if they have a non biased opinion they say it  is excellent not perfect by any means but better then what a lot of us have been experiencing,  have also read "from reddit" that is supposed to be a patch..not confirmed but hopefully considering Meta's past practices with the frequent updates on the Q2 hopefully it will happen, I am ready to return mine, have the feeling the price will come down anyway, payed almost 1000 dollars Canadian..with all the hype and promises of a quality pass through it was a very disappointing experience, also tried to get a  hold of Meta Live chat, never had any issues before but now trying for the last 3 days can't get through at all, have the feeling they are getting flooded with live chat requests

I have exactly the same issue.

I have the same issue, my passthrough is so bad it's unusable. I thought as someone stated that i forgot to remove the plastic protection, but there is none. Some pictures posting here is actually good. Mine is so grainy and the resolution so bad. It's like the first camera phone. If even that. It has to be an hardware problem, because it can't be this bad.

same here is this normal or it should be better

Some people love it, some people hate it. Personally mine is very grainy. I keep hearing it is a lighting issue but I think it goes beyond that and actually is that the hardware isn't as good in some of them. I am considering bringing mine back and exchanging it for another.

This! It's not an light issue. I have tried in good light and it still very grainy. It's an hardware problem and Meta should adress this! I hate that every Meta-fan or youtuber that has a good headset claims that it's just the light. No it's not. It's an hardware problem.

I find it to be pretty sharp as far as viewing like video playing or reading text in the middle area. Outer areas not so sharp. So far I like it ok however I only had original Quest previously , never had Quest 2 so ya pretty big leap for me.

Same here, no way I can read text in a book or screen through the headset, no difference if the room is lit by 1 or 5 strong room lights or if the room also gets extra light from a window (not direct sunlight).

I know this seems like a useless reply, but why don’t you take off your quest if you are reading a book?

Is anyone else experiening jittery image or screen tearing when moving in passthrough mode? I'm not sure but I think it might have started after the last update or I didn't see it because I'm still fascinated (lol)

Anyone else having this "issue"?

No suggestions?

I have heard that when the quest 3 first came out there was a clear picture but after a new update came out causing the camera quality to be grainy my guess is the update has accidentally change the cameras frequency so it made the quality worse or broke something else for lack of compatibility with the os hopefully there is a update to fix this
