Hey everyone! The engineering team has been reading feedback and doing some testing on this topic. We've found that the most common cause of any passthrough noise or unexpected quality is due to the amount of lighting in the room. To get the best experience with passthrough, check out our article here.

The team is still interested in everyone's feedback and will continue to analyze passthrough performance.

guys I've made many tests and the conclusion is : in recording camera mode through the quest 3 cam menu, the video looks pretty decent, in fact as good as seen from the reviewers and influencers. And, surprisely, the quality is also good enough when I record with my cell through one of the quest 3 lens!!!

Now the verdict : the grainy and bad quality picture seen in passthrough mode only occurs with our eyes in direct real vision, headset on the head. That should explains why so many users think their unit is defect. The rest (video showing nice passthrough) is not a true experience or the reality....

A few tips : as it already said, you need strong light environnement to have the best picture in passthrough.  It does improve only 10-15% ; so it's not the saint-graal but it can make things better. Also I see when you decrease a little bit the light parameter via the menu, the grainy effect is attenuated.

In a nutshell, the main issuue regarding the poor rendering of the passthrough is only what we only see with our eyes and not the picture/signal through the lens. (I know, hard to explain but it's a matter of fact). I'm sure the Meta techs will work hard to fix than with an update 😉 Quest 3 is a nice device but it's a new born. Give it some time.

I understand what you are saying but it seems when some people talk about is that you can actually read your cellphone screen with passthrough which is totally impossible for me.
So if it was just in recording mode that quality was good, people wouldn't say they can read their phone to enter codes for example when registering device, etc.  Hopefully there will be an update that makes it the same quality in direct passthrough viewing as the recording you are talking about.

I may have found a fix if you reboot your headset the passthrough might automatically fix itself btw when I mean reboot I mean go to the android boot menu from selecting the power and volume button at the same time and select reboot from there

any then and after comparaison ? What does it change ? Maybe it can explain when I first power on the quest 3 II think the passthrough picture was much clearer than after registration and update... Maybe I'm wrong...

Mine is a bit blurry but this is to be expected. This is why the Apple Vision will be $3500. This is a $500 device and for the price I feel it is next level incredible. I have had the 1, 2, pro and now 3 and the 3 is by far the best. The slight grain doesn't affect my satisfaction in any way at all. I sit in my room at night, one small lamp on and there is slight grain, soft image. I am not sure what kind of camera sensor the 3 uses but it is a small one for sure. Small sensors are always grainier, especially in lower light and yes, light does have a lot to do with it. I can read my phone in some lighting and in others no way. Even so it is leagues better than the 2 and quite a step up from the Pro. I find nothing to complain about for the price. Maybe Meta should release three models. A basic 3 at $299, the normal 3 at its current price and a "Pro II" at $1k to compete with Apple. The Apple device will be much different and less based on games and more on cinema and work but it will have a gorgeous display as it should. No way we can get a perfect passthrough for $500 but I bet that Meta will do some updates to maybe clean it up a bit. There's only so much a small sensor can do in low light.

Hello, does anyone have any news about what's going on with the Quest 3 with defective "passthrough"? Will there be another update or will you get a replacement device?

Has anyone already sent in their defective Quest 3 and how long does it take?

The "passthrough" cannot be used for me and I asked Meta directly but haven't gotten an answer for 6 days.
Should you send the Quest 3 back and buy a new one yourself or will you get a functional replacement at some point? Or will Meta make a update and all will work fine? Why don't you get an answer from Meta?
(For my Quest 3 it has nothing to do with the light in the room. I tried all conditions.)

That's the main question for now. Only Meta knows the answer...

[NOT A SOLUTION] - Just marking this as the solution so that everyone is able to see the updates quicker when they come in.

Hey everyone, thanks for reaching out to flag this. I noticed this thread was getting some traction, so I went ahead and passed it along for the product and engineering teams to dive into. As soon as I get some more information, I'll be updating the thread!

This has plagued me as well. I have a very VERY bright space with cool light and it's not good. The passthrough is extremely low quality and very grainy. Extremely disappointed in this but I'm hoping for a software update that gets it to the best quality. I am really envying the people who have headsets that look like you are just looking through a pair of glasses.

Same issue here. I hope this is only a Software issue because mixed reality looks very different from what was advertised.

Today I asked Meta again what I should do with my Quest 3 and also took a photo of what it looks like through the lens, let's see if I get an answer... here you can see the picture of Quest 3 through the lens S23 Ultra made.

Quest 3 passthrough bad quality

Up and Coming
October 19, 2023

Received my Quest 3 today and well first passthrough experience was so bad omg.

The passthrough quality is nothing compared to what i would have expected watching all the Influencers reviews.

I set my hopes into the firmware update but it looks same bad afterwards.
All that expectations seeing in Videos are now wiped with that Quest2 Passthrough look but well in colour.

A grainy pixel fest no matter what light condition is .
Even under good lightning everything is oberbuzzed bright and grainy as hell.

- I cannot read anything on Smartphone or PC as the Youtube Influencers pretend it looks like.

- If i watch my monitor its like overbuzzed brightness and i see nothing.

What is going on?

Is my Unit defect?

Did the Youtubers not tell the truth and just added the recorded videos, which as i read here, look way better then it is experiencing it in the headset to pretend it's a great passthrough?

They told the people they can read their smartphones and work on pc and read the text on the

monitor with it.

I own all Oculus / Meta Headsets from start and i really wonder now.

There is a thread on reddit about this topic. This grainy visuals doesn't seem to be the standard, as some users say they tried a quest 3 which looked nothing like that. The best discription so far is. It looks like quest 2 but with color. The pass through live images are horrible but the result streamed to the occulus app or recorded videos from it look very diffrent from what you see in the headset.

An offical response from meta about this topic would be great, because this seems to be a bigger problem that needs to be solved. I will send mine back, if they don't respond to that issue within the next days.

By the way, at the moment you can't buy new apps or games. There always pops up a message about "suspicious activitys that happen right now and due to security safty you can't purchas any app".

Anyone else who has this issue?

All that summed up, a horrible launch for that headset. I am very disappointed.

I testen my quest 3, and its all about Light. White bright Light makes  everything clear. I dont have that kind of Light in my house. So if i want it as clear as i see it on youtube videos i need to remodel my house.

You need 2 sit 30 cm from your screen if you want it clear.

Hello, I have the same problem, I have factory reset and they are still the same, please it is ok if meta support or a moderator could give us more information about whether it is working in solving this problem since it is quite annoying for the eyes
