Hey everyone! The engineering team has been reading feedback and doing some testing on this topic. We've found that the most common cause of any passthrough noise or unexpected quality is due to the amount of lighting in the room. To get the best experience with passthrough, check out our article here.

The team is still interested in everyone's feedback and will continue to analyze passthrough performance.

Just posting here to say it is now November 24th and no update has solved this issue for me. Since receiving the Quest 3 I expected the passthrough to be significantly better as was advertised, by my experience has been similar to others here in that it just looks like a slightly improved version of the Quest 2 passthrough with color. That is to say, it's basically unusable other than for maybe seeing my keyboard vaguely when using something like Immersed but the quality is so poor and grainy that I can barely read what's actually on the keys. so basically if I wasn't already good at touch typing with a vague understanding of where most symbols are there's no way I'd ever be able to find them through passthrough. Very disappointed given how hard the passthrough and MR functionality was advertised. The passthrough seems to be pretty worthless when viewed from within the headset live.

I would also add that my phone is wholly unusable in passthrough. No amount of adjusting the IPD setting or moving my phone closer or further away or changing its brightness has any effect on it. The best I can see is the very large clock time on my lock screen and even that is pretty rough looking. Notifications or basically anything else are totally unreadable smudges.

just got the meta quest 3,  also bad passtrought, it is out of focus and over exposed.

when i hold somting at 25 cm its perfect,  everything more away as 30 cm  is out of focus and over exposed.

the focus is a hardware problem,  the overexposure software, nice was a update to correct the overexposure.

this one goes back, ill orderd an new one.  when ist also bad.....  ill pass.

less to say the rest is SUPER.

The first and worst thing is that it is not somewhat focused. Anything from 30 centimeters or further becomes a blur, what makes it even worse is that everything (again) that is further away than 30 cm is overexposed. So much so that when I look at my mobile phone from, say, 40 cm, only a white screen can be seen (even if I set the brightness to its lowest). So if I were to buy a virtual desktop (which was my goal) and I would use my own keyboard with the passthrout "funtion" DN, I would not be able to read the keys... duhh that's the point of this feature anyway. well before I bought the quest 3 I watched many youtube videos and OR they are all paid by Meta to put it better there than it is... Either they have a better quest at their disposal or the mass production means that the quality is no longer scrutinized. so so or so unacceptable.

same here, got a lux meter  my room is more then 300 lux,  still the same over exposure...  the grainy is not my problem i can live with that  but the over exposure is making very thing bad.  i cant use virtuel desktop like that...

So who returned Quest 3 due to this issue? The sun is out and passthrough still looks like the camera from a 1995 Nokia phone. I could have sworn I saw adverts showing seamless mixed reality/passthrough.

Same here, received my quest 3 from Netherlands. I can't read my phone or see my keyboard all is blurry with a lot of pixels. I have white spots the room is very well illuminated.

Will meta fix this? For 600€ equipment I'm very disappointed, thinking to send it back.

So, I purchased a Quest 3 last week and what really impressed me from all the video reviews and articles was the pass-through camera quality.  I was lead to believe that the images would be very clear (not perfect but would give me the ability to read a book under decent lighting).  Well, this was the furthest from the truth.  The image viewed in the headset is very grainy unless I get right up on top of an object and even then it is still grainy.  I understand the warping and I was expecting that.  But even with very brightly lit room utilizing overhead and regular lighting I still get a grainy mess.  Why were all the videos put out by reviewers, "influencers" and the advertisements showing what appeared to be of the same quality as an iPhone from 1 or 2 generations ago (which I would be very happy with!)?  Is there something going on in the headset that makes the viewed image grainy but the recorded and played back images/videos very clear?  Was there a software update that caused this?  Will there be an update to fix it?

Everything else about the Quest 3 has blown me away (coming from a CV1 owner since 2017) and exceeded my skeptical expectations - except battery life.  That is pretty bad IMO.  But I digress.....

Is Meta even investigating this?
