Question

Meta Link freezes after a few seconds

After installing latest Meta Horizon Windows app update (85.0.0.239.552), the display inside headset freezes (sometimes goes black, similar to when proximity sensor kicks in, but while still wearing VR headset)  after a few seconds after establishing cabled link (official 5m cable). Have to restart PC and re-establish Link to get it to work again, but then same happens after a few seconds. Can still hear audio inside headset, and when using games it seems to do head tracking (monitor screen updates, but not inside headset). This also happens inside the Meta Link view (grey environment with grid floor and ceiling inside VR headset after establishing link).

Firmware in VR headset is also on latest version,

This happened after updating Meta Horizon Windows app on 3rd/4th March. Before this it was working perfect.

Have tested this on 4 different PC's, with 3 different Meta Quest 3 headsets and one Quest Pro, with same result.

Hardware on test PC's:

Windows 11, different i9 processors (13th/14th gen, Intel Core Ultra 9), RTX 5090 laptop, RTX 5070 Ti Desktop, RTX 4090 desktop. 64GB RAM,

NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Drivers 595.71 WHQL driver + latest Windows updates

Nope, I tried this and it still freezes up after a little while.

Hmm... Check if your C:\Program Files\Oculus folder isn't write-locked...

I did the same thing before performing the steps I mentioned:

- Right-click on the "Oculus" folder

- Select "Properties"

- Go to the "Security" tab

- Click "Edit permissions" (or just "Change", my W11 is a French distribution)

- For each Group and user, grant "Full control"

This folder was also write-locked on my end... which immediately triggered an update right after....

It didn't seem like a big deal at the time since it didn't prevent freezing... but it was probably related....

Anyway, after making changes via the "Oculus Debug Tool", I haven't had any freezes anymore, ever again... whereas everything used to freeze within 1 to 5 minutes max before.

So clearly, "in my case", this was THE solution.

(Version Meta Horizon Link 206.0.0.103.432)

Good luck...

Hmmm... Of course, don't overclock your graphics card (RTX5080 in my case)... IA and VR drivers hates that...

After using 591.86 for several months, I finally tried virtualdesktop with the usb->ethernet hack.  Not only does this work with the latest nvidia drivers, the graphics settings, fps, stability, useability are far better.  Night and day difference.  I just updated to the latest beta version of virtualdesktop and now it connects directly via the usb cable. Check this video and others by the same guys for set up info.

Super broke?, as opposed to Standard broke, or Special Limited Edition broke?  steve_40 Is this worthy of the Monty Python treatment? 🤔😁

Crazy to think Meta doesn't test the link cable with the new drivers

A big red banner Saying "Your NVIDIA graphics driver has a known bug which causes Meta Horizon Link to freeze-up during gameplay. Please roll back to version 591.86 or earlier. Learn More. "

How can this bug or issue could not be solved until this October 2026 month? Such a driver is from January !!!

It is beyond ridiculous that a software breaking bug that stops the usability of PC Link is not corrected after 10 months. Inexcusable.
