What Wifi 6e routers currently works bug free with the Quest 3?

Hi! Just wanted to post here to get a seperate thread going. As of today there is a major bug in communication between Quest 3 and certain types of Router models.

So let's get a list started on Wifi 6e routers that actually work. What Router do you have experience with being stable at 2400 Mbps in dedicated 6e mode?

Remember to post Router name and model and screen grabs/video from the Quest 3 showing the speed. (Turn on experimental wifi settings to do so.)

This is by no account a list that is for everyone. So far I found that some of the more expensive models between 350-700$/€ have been reported to work. So meta still has a major bug to fix. But if you can afford it, this might be is a way around the problem…

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

The bug explained:

There is a bug with negotiation rates with certain router models. Essentially AX and AXE models but more might also be affected. I have been investigating this bug since launch and finally both Meta and TP-Link have confirmed that the Quest3s negotiation protokolls with the routers is very unstable. This problem is totally unrelated to VD or AirPlay functionality, but it's here you'll notice the problem.

As of right now the Mbps can flux from approximately 1080 to 1900 on 6G and ocasinaly dip down below 800. Making it stutter and glitch in latency.

On 5G it will flux between 1080 and 420 Mbps making it essentially unusable in wireless PC streaming.

Both Meta and TP-Link are currently investigating the problem.

Meta has stated that the problem will be fixed with a firmware build in the near future.

If your experiencing this bug and want to follow its progress you can follow this seperate thread:

Dear TFosseli,

I don´t know why, but my Asus RT-AXE7800 has never work with Quest 3 on 6 Ghz band... (only 5 Ghz), as you instead reported.

Even I tried to split the wifi SSID for 2.4/5 ghz and 6 ghz separated.

Forced or not the 160 mhz bandwidth channel or PSC on/off... but I can´t see the 6 Ghz SSID.

Only the WIFI 6 (5 Ghz band) work for me.... WIFI 6E NO.

Someone can help me?

Thanks

Federico

PS - same result for all Quest 3 firmware v.57 - v.59  - v.60

To ALL users with my problem mentioned above with Asus RT-AXE7800 router.

After many tests side by side the router, I discovery how to see my dedicated 6ghz SSID... but still not working with Quest 3.

The problem was for me the automatic Bandwidth Channel setting:

  • Set to Automatic or 160 Mhz fixed ... Q3 cant never see the 6 Ghz SSID
  • 80 Mhz .... Q3 barely see the 6 Ghz SSID but cant connect to it
  • 20 / 40 Mhz ... Q3 sometime yes  sometime no see the 6 Ghz SSID, it can connect but after some seconds loose connection and automatically switch to 5ghz SSID (even if 6 ghz signal strenght reported as excellence by Quest3).

Now I am aware that WIFI 6E standard is NOT good and even not supported by some router manufacturers, but I am starting to think that Quest 3 is the gulty.

I'm also in the same boat - looking for the best router for Quest 3. I'm currently using a Zephyrus Duo 15 SE so my network card seems to have 1Gbps maximum transfer speed but I'm thinking about switching to a new version of the Duo at some point. Therefore I'd like to ask the following: I have the Intel AX210 network card which runs on WiFi 6E. Would it be better to run VD through wifi instead of Ethernet due to it being just that much faster?

And then there's the router. What is the best one that is enough bandwith while also having a good range? The Asus AXE16000 is extremely expensive, I really like the Linksys Hydra 6E Pro but I see that it only has 1Gbps ports for wired connection instead of at least 2.5Gbps.

What would the best option for me be? Is the Asus AX11000 Pro enough even though it's not 6E?

I have the wifi AX211 6e and the conection speed over wifi 5 and wifi 6e is no way near fast enough to play games or anything . i have had to make an extra purchase of £200 on a router just to get wifi 5 at a decent rate to play pcvr

Archer AX95 triband so each channel is separate and can be turned off individually ( made no difference when i tried disabling the different bands to see if there was interference )

houses are mainly bungalows that are widely spaced with a few flats about 100 ft away so its not traffic in my area as signals degrade too much before they get to me , i can pick up about 10 to 15 other users around my on a wifi scan on phone and pc but the signals are very low i wouldn't be able to connect to them .

there are only 3 or 4 other WIFI users around me that have signals that are strong enough for me to be able to connect and they all use channels  below 43 .

i have the tp-link and on the 5ghz channel it connects at 2400mbps and has fluctuations down to 1700mbps , wifi 6e on the router is fine but the quest 3 wont connect higher than 2100mbps and fluctuates too much even with the channel set at 100dfs to 128dfs which is the range you can set wifi 6 , wifi 5 has channels from 30 to 64 wifi 2.4 has channels 1 top 13

i have the 2.4ghz set channel 1 at low power 40mhz channel width for 244mbps ( have my phone and wifi devices connected to this channel 2 devices max 1 ( phone ) mostly

then the wifi 5 at channel 64 160mhz width medium power output for dedicated quest 3 currently connecting at 2400mbos each way fluctuations down to 1700mbps but mainly in the higher 2000 range

then wifi 6E channel 128dfs 160mhz width high power output for dedicated quest 3 currently connecting at 1500-1700mbps  and spikes to 2400 mbps

Many thanks to all of you for your answer. I'll gladly wait for the bug to disappear !

Anyway, as I have a low spec PC, I was wondering: is there a way to estimate through computation how much MBps someone really need for the wireless connection? I read things such as the fastest MBps would only be required for "high" setting, but it's a bit fuzzy. Is there like a way to calculate which speed is required based on the framerate frequency, the resolution and the codec ? I guess that with high spec PC you always want the max, but for lower end / mid range PC it makes no sense and we should aim for something slower.... but no idea how much is required.

I've wiped my hands of them i pay 500 for a faulty product and to become their beta tester when all this should have been done before they asked for my £500 its the last time i support meta my money stays in my pocket and their table remains without food from now on. and i stick to my original statement if you releasee something that's Wi-Fi 6 it should work with everything that's WI-FI 6 . that's why we have standards and laws in place to stop company's doing this but for some reason their skating around the laws. any company that skates around laws is not worth my time or effort. i deal in honesty and integrity something meta don't have.

Quest 3 is a bleeding-edge product. It might not seem like one since its only $499 due to Meta subsidizing it, but when you see its closest competitor is 7x the price (and still doesn't do some of the things Quest 3 does, vice versa too of course), then it gives you insight on how cutting edge it actually is.

With cutting edge products, sometimes there is not always a clean answer, and its not always going to work with the gear you have.  In that case, you can return it, wait and hope it gets fixed, or spend money to fix the problem.

Its not meta trying to skate around anything, its about an incredible amount of tech packed into a tiny space.  Really that simple.

My quest 3 worked fine this morning without stutters when using virtual desktop and steamvr. Then I tested it again and the stutters are back (stuttering every 3 seconds). It seems that the Network also spikes from 5 to 10 and then it stutters. Do anyone know good settings for ASUS GT-AX6000 and Quest 3.

It appears that the ASUS GT-AX6000 router may not be optimally compatible with my Oculus Quest 3. I tested a TP-Link AXE75 operating on the 6GHz band and it worked great no stutter. Tested to switch to  ASUS GT-AX6000 again and the stutters came back. Could the issue potentially stem from an excessive presence of 5GHz clients within my vicinity when using ASUS GT-AX6000.

Have you ran a Wifi Analyzer to see if interfere is the problem you think it may be?

What about 6E access points? I don’t want to uproot my entire network just to install a consumer router for 6E capability. I would much rather just slap on a dedicated access point.

the ubiquiti u6 is overkill, I’m just in an apartment and don’t want to cook myself alive with an enterprise tier AP. Are there any other compact 6E APs that are <=$200?

I’m purchasing a Zyxel NWA220AX-6E and will report back with performance to the Quest 3

Hey richardwtidwell , I've actually bought and tested the Ubiquiti Unif 7 Pro a few weeks back to pair it with the Quest 3. I already had two Unifi 6 Long Range APs (Wifi 6 with 5GHz) that serve a number of clients. Network Latency when streaming spiked quite often and I concluded that the other clients on the 5GHz network would be to blame, so I decided to give the Unifi 7 Pro a try and connect the Quest via Wifi 6E (6GHz). This turned out to be a major disaster as the U7 Pro was not able to deliver a smooth experience in the 6GHz band. Network latency spiked to over 100ms every few seconds and games became unplayable. When using the 5GHz band with the 7 Pro, everything was back to normal again. I did not figure out the exact cause for this (CPU & Memory usage on the AP looked normal when gaming) and in the end I decided to stick with my already existing U6 Long Range APs. I configured one of them to run on an unused frequency in the 5GHz band and dedicated it to the Quest as its sole client. This works quite well, albeit not perfect with a few stutters now and then.

To sum it up, if you need a new AP anyway, the U7 looks like a solid and reasonably priced choice, but according to my experience you will need to stick with the 5GHz band when pairing it with the Quest. In your specific use case (congested 5GHz band) this is going to be a problem.

If you set signal strength to low  6ghz band works with the u7 pro and the quest3, but…

I just got a U7 Pro in the mail today. I'm not really having any success with it at all.

My quest3 connects on 5GHz at 572Mbps, and on 6GHz at only 286Mbps!  I've tried lots of different channels, and turned the signal strength up and down on all three bands and nothing made any difference.  I think I'm going to end up returning the device.

I bought a raxe300 nighthawk router thinking this issue was resolved (as it says solved in this post which is very misleading). Ping from 5ms after connection for 20 seconds, then anywhere from 8 to 400ms afterwards. I spent the whole day yesterday changing settings to no avail. Poopy poop poop….

Participant

What streaming solution are you using? I recently got a RAXE500 and have not experienced the increase in ping. What game was it?

Participant
February 29, 2024

I am playing population one natively on the Quest 3. The ping is all over the map. Sometimes it much better and steadier when I plug in my "8-years old" router and use that. I have a 6e router from my ISP, and experience the same problems on that. It is very evident when doing speedtests from the browser ping 5ms at first then from that to 400ms after connected for less than a minute. I wish there was an ethernet jack on the quest 3... I am also experiencing fluctuating bitrate when streaming PCVR over wifi, though the bandwidth is better than on my other router/wifi 5.
