Crescent Bay headphones a joke??

should not be attached where you can't use your own headphones..

personally earbuds are best like the Bose QC20 where it is active noise cancelling

its far superior than over ear because the bass is deep because of the seal

no overear as it heats up the ear as well

I should point out that comfort issues of overear do not apply, because with the Rift none of that weight or pressure goes on your ear.

The phones are securely mounted to the headband and hover right over your ear unless you deliberately adjust them to press inward. So it isn't reasonable to compare these to other overears you may have used, the form factor is totally different.

That's a great observation. The headphones do indeed just rest beside your ear without putting downward pressure.

I think the best way is to encapsulate the whole head like a dome and put speakers in precise locations and tuning for the way its meant to be atmospherically environment heard then

so you can hear whats under and whats on top than just everything is heard from the side

That seems... overdone. Besides, that's what HRTF does with a simple set of headphones. That's the whole point of HRTF.

There's also the fact that part of our directional hearing involves twitching our head side to side and hearing how the sound is affected. Subconsciously, of course. I wonder if the Rift's tracking has the resolution to detect that and throw it into the simulation.

That tells everything about you. Here is what you think is good.

When you want to talk about actual good audio and not "EPIC ROXOR SUPER BASS BOOM" feel free to try again.

Deep bass is viscerally satisfying on a primal level, but aside from a club simulator when is it going to come into play? I'm not listening to music on my rift, I'm trying to recreate reality. Nothing in reality has heavy bass except elephant communication, and that's so bass we can't even hear it.

Personalized HRTF from a picture of my ear? I can take a picture of my ear! This is the real breakthrough. If the entry level for a personalized HRTF is lowered from "knows a guy with an HRTF research setup who can calculate my HRTF" to "has a digital camera" then everyone and their grandma will be enjoying beautiful directional sound.

People underestimate how powerful human's directional hearing is. The other day we were pressure testing a hydronic heating system and I was able to locate the leak by listening. There was a whole tangle of pipes and I was able to point to one and go "try isolating that one" and I was right on the first try. If I can do that in VR I will be a happy camper.

I didn't read this entire thread, but I wanted to weigh in.

Integrated headphones are a integral part of the VR experience. It's important that developers can optimize the experience for the consumers, to maximize the experience and to ensure it's the same across all devices.

After showing off the rift to probably nearly 100 different people I realize that headphones are a big problem, they are of different quality audio wise and they add a extra cable to the user making him experience himself more like a cybernetic Borg drone from Star Trek with cables wrapping around him. They increase the stuff you need to worry about on your head. It's cumbersome to put on the rift and then put on the headphones, and then take off your headphones and then the rift... in that order or it all tangles up. Having to help people put this stuff on is proof that the current design is awful, it should be seamless.

The consumer rift needs to be comfortable and easy, not irritating and inconvenient. So good decision for Oculus to integrate them into the headset, make them standard, but still optional if you really want to use different headphones.
