DK2 Development kit

I have been waiting on the DK2 kit to develop on, and I saw that Quarter 3 is the time that it is going to be released based on these projections. Is this a correct assumption that the DK2 models will ship in august? I reference:

If this is correct, and it is using your new display screens, is it also correct to assume the stereo camera support? this could kickstart my project MUCH further, and a buddy I have been in talks with will move on to developing on this platform, he rejected the initial idea due to Resolution.

On another note,

we saw this, and now were thinking of implementation into a project we are working on using the rift :)

    Hello,

From the evidence, it looks like there will not be a Development Kit Version 2. And from a business stand point, it makes a lot of sense.

Why spend the money and the logistics of manufacturing to make a small upgrade to a product that will only be sold to developers.

Any real developer can make games using the current development kit. Once the consumer version comes out, you can just scale up your project.

I guess we all need to lower the bar here so that everyone on the left of the curve can read basic words correctly.

it may not be actual dates but often times companies do plan for the long term. The DK2 was directly mentioned (and the official first time its been publicly stated) in the Edge Magazine June cover story briefly. I think it would be good if possible they can come out with a higher res Dev Kit before consumer launch as games like OutTErra really look terrible on the current rift some games fair better then others but I think devs who put hard work into detailed worlds would apprechate having a higher resolution dev kit. :-)

and by the way the HD prototype may not be an actual product (some say the field of view is lower anyways so it might not be good for dev kit 2) but that woudnt mean they coudnt use another design with a diffrent (better?) screen for dev kit 2. it just means that the HD model they are showing around is just another prototype but not a new "product" is all. im sure Palmer has a dozen or so Rift Prototypes they most likely use internally as that was his process in making the Rift to start with :-). but it doesnt mean that it doesnt rule out a DK2 with a better screen, just not that spacific "model".

Thing is.. you got customers and you got developers.. but there is a third group customers being developers. I for one are foremost a customer but I am also a programmer. And there are many people out there like me. Right now I am in dubio whether I should by the dev kit now. I like to make some stuff for the oculus rift but I do not want to spend my money on a dev kit only to have the HD version to be announced 1 month later.

I was browsing the Internet for some more info and found this:

Latency and field of view will be improved in forthcoming dev kits, the resolution will be improved in the consumer model, and positional tracking may be supported further down the line.

Atleast we know there will be more dev kit versions.. although the HD version could be consumer version exclusive?

Actually, we do NOT know that there will be more "dev kit versions". No such plans have been announced by Oculus. Such a claim is in fact contrary to reliable quotes from Palmer Luckey and others. The increased latency and increased FoV in "future dev kits" is just journalistic sensationalism. It sounds good but lacks reliable substantiation. All we can know is that there will be (and are) minor improvements in the existing dev kit, and major improvements in PROTOTYPES to demonstrate technology that may go into the Consumer Rift.

That said, there may be future dev kits that come out (before or after the Consumer Rift) IF the opportunity presents itself due to future changes in component pricing and availability. But we cannot count on ANY significant changes in future "dev kit versions" despite whatever attention-seeking claims some journalist may publish.

Only minor production line changes. Same version, different sub-version. Not a DK2 by any means. ;)

Maybe, but that can't be inferred from the powerpoint slide.
