Full-Dive Technology Idea

Ok. Hey guys i have a rough theory of how full-dive could work.

Take an EEG, used to measure electrical impulses of the brain. If you would use a tech like that to send signals back as well as receive them, while at the same time diverting them into the PC (Player Character) rather than into a persons real body, then there is the full dive system right there. The only problem would be how to calibrate it all, but with the advanced tech we have, I have no doubt that it could be done.

There's my theory. I think it could work but if you have doubts just tell me and i'll try to improve it!

Or something less lethal like bowel control. :)

The book of Better Than Life (one of the Red Dwarf novels. Darker and more serious than the tv show) dealt with VR. The BTL headset had probes that drilled into your forehead to directly access your brain. People would get so addicted to it they wouldn't leave the virtual world, they'd stay in until their real body died (if nobody was looking after them).

I have been reading this "idea" in so many forums from people that have just whatched Sword Art Online that its becoming annoying, specially because of the fact that all of them says it like its his own idea or something, like if everybody of us VR enthusiast have never thought of that. By the way you speak i assume you are low aged, only thing i can say you is that no scientist is gonna read it and say "oh god, why didnt i thought of that, i would make it asap"./quote]

For the record i thought about VR waaaaaaaaay before i watched anyway anime/show with it in it. I was using Sword Art Online as a reference cos it seemed like the easiest one to use so dont get your panties in a knot. and im not low aged. what kind of a child is 21.

For the rest of you those are good responses. But how about something like that prosthetic arm hooked up to the nerves. Maybe we could do something lie that but do it in our necks(surgery...)

But VR could be good for many purposes and some bad. Like if there was a fire how would you know? there should be an emergency log out button irl. But it's good for the crippled people and teaching purposes i guess

Wish also that this was possible but unfortunately it is reeeeaaaally far-fetched.
Okay time to lay down some biology and stuff:
This thing with an EEG to sensor brainwaves may be possible somewhere in the future but the problem is how to send your movement data that your moving your arm without actually moving... The problem is that there is no known way to paralyze the body without using drugs(or blunt force trauma to the back of the neck :P ).
And if this hurdle somehow was succeded we will get to problem nr. 2.
If we lie immovable for long times while playing it could cause muscle degeneration and a declining health.

This with implants that would stimulate nerves etc. would cause a foreign body reaction which would cause the implants to be covered in a fibrous capsule and inhibit their contact to nerves(interestingly in the game Deus Ex:Human Revolution you play as the first person who is genetically adapted to no foreign body reaction and thus can have implants).

It's much easier to diss an idea than to figure it out.
I am more hopeful for something in the lines of Ready Player One when it comes to input devices.
Cool drawing of Wade's hideout that I found on reddit: http://www.vividscribe.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/3-Artwork-Ready_Player_One-Wade_in_Hideout.jpg

There is a way to hinder your muscles to move .
Its called muscle relaxants. These substances prevent your muscles from moving because they inhibit signal transmission between your neuromuscular junctions and muscle fibers.
Medicines use it for clinical operations. They are effective for half an hour but the effect can be prolonged by injecting every half an hour more of the 'stuff'.
But i think if we one day could get peripheral neurophotonic nerve implants in every major peripheral nerve then they should also be able to shut down signals coming from your brain.

By the way, one nervus opticus contains roughly 1 million axons(nerve end, prolongation). A peripheral nerve thousands.

Yeah that was what I meant with drugs(among others) ^^
Well in any case. Medicine and technology need to evolve by leaps and bounds for any of this to be possible so who knows ^^

oh, yes you mentioned it.
There is plenty of room for innovation in biological systems.
This bio-genetic-stemcell future will be as awesome and as crazy as VR itself.
One day we will recreate dinosaurs controlled by human thoughts!
We just don't understand genetics and cell interaction at evolving of cell growth well enough.
But in principle, why couldn't human cells evolve into a Velociraptor outer form factor with cornea and various pigment cells? What makes us human is the brain capacitiy, the rest is limbs and organs to keep the cells alive.
We are just at the beginning to 3d print organs(with vascular system) into forms and shapes.

That's making me think of the South Park episode where Kyle's father becomes a dolphin.
Just imagine how hard it will be to not discriminate against people if they can have different bodies. Such as a restaurant getting sued for not being velociraptor accessible. :)
(and we'll probably end up with my little ponies running around everywhere)

Errm, if your answer to the problem is "nanobots a millionth of the size of what we can build today", or "slap some electrodes on your head and pow, straight to the moon!" then you should realize that you're talking about science fiction. That's stuff that is decades or centuries away from practicality. Trying to claim that something requiring many orders of magnitude improvement in what is currently possible will be ready in five or six years just makes you look silly.

    OK so to summarize everything.
My theory is apparently wrong. Discussions about drugs to do with VR. Some guy was a total jerk. So maybe if we put all current theories together we could get a theory that could work. So right now i'll get to work on it

It will happen faster than you can think.
The dream to create a second perceivable universe in every way(remember, this is still the philosophical side of the coin) is INSANE but with VR evolving and biotech advancing that fast every day a step closer.
Experimentally this will be done. Bet your house on this. peripheral nerves are just beneath your skin. Its an very easy operation and scientists and medicines will be tempted to do it every second.
Peripheral nerve interfaces. This is the way to go. Forget brain caps.......Thats scifi, imagination.
It all has to do with physics and biological structures and mechanisms, you know. No magic or fantasy.
