More resolution = more revolution

Hi

The next generation of small display is on the way. Look at the new smartphone Sony Xperia Z or the new HTC One, they have a full HD display.

Because not only the most high viewing angle but also the resolution cloud make the Oculus VR glasses to a revolution, try to implement such a full HD display as soon as possible. Also guess about to place two displays vertically - for each eye its own, to get even more resolution.

With such a VR glass you have a real revolution!!

Thanks for thinking forward.

he is right Maddy25, remove a lens from your rift and put at 2 inch in front of the sony xperia Z and the Samsung s4 amoled display and tell us if it looks a lot better than the actual dev kit screen....

yeah, should try it out but unfortionatly i dont have a Rift yet, i will buy the consumer version

i tried the Rift at a event but i don't have one either but can someone here who have an oculus rift Dev Kit, would try to put one of the lens over a HD ultra sharp OLED Display, 7 inch or 5 inch and discribe here how it looks.

If it's great with a high definition display than the Oculus Rift will be a garanteed success and when the flexible screen will be available and cheap, the oculus rift will be a must for every gamer around the world....

oh yeah these thin displays could even improve the Rift in the future. i mean the Rift by FAR is the absolute BEST we can have for VR for now but i could imagine an even smaller and lighter device, ideally the size of common sun-glasses. i hope we will have such devices some time in the future with at least the same quality than the Rift

Do you think they will show a high definition prototype at E3....

Remember the lenses when thinking of screens. I tested the DevKit and the picture for each eye was something around 550x 550(A cups) and 420x420(C cups) if I remember correctly. The original panel would've gotten around 640x640(A) and 500x500(C). I could be off, don't quote me on that.

The corners weren't visible through the lenses so there was even less resolution.

If a 7" screen is used with the ConsumerRift, the lenses need to be different to not waste screen space.

Based on those numbers above, with the current DevKit lenses:

7" 2560x1600 panel would get around 1100x1100(A cups) or 840x840(C cups) per eye.
5.6" 1920x1200 panel would get somewhere around 960x960(A) and 720x720(C).

Well, the current lens profiles are a no-go anyway, for production units (unless we can get dome-shaped displays), given that they do not provide uniform focus across the viewplane. (incidently, the infamous screen door effect is (naturally) not as visible out in the blurry periphery -- has anybody experimented with different lens-to-display_panel distances and found the tradeoffs worth it? :7)

It's going to be nice, though, when a return to 5" leave us with less screen real estate wasted. :7

What I'm mostly curious about, is whether the currently used barrel distortion algorithm and its associated unit-specific parameters, will be sufficient for every future optical solution (backwards compatibility concerns, given that every title is expected to do the distortion themselves, rather than going through a common framework)...

i just hope they will also make a high definition model. What ever it will cost, i will buy it....

It looks great but the screen must be High res to make it exeptional....

Maybe we will see a High resolution " Oculus Rift 2 " prototype next week at E3......!
