No impressive VR app so far.

Similar to Augmented Reality, when it was first introduced, everyone thought it was cool but after so many years, we have not yet seen a successful application/game which convincingly makes good use of the technology.... I am afraid VR is having the same issue as Oculus Rift DK has been released for a while already, nothing is really impressive, practical and necessarily...

Do you agree?

I think to some degree it's a matter of the earlyness of it all, especially where input is concerned.

I don't know about anyone else, but for me I think the biggest wow moments will come with experiences that support full body motion in some fashion, e.g., Stompz or ODT and ControlVR, and not just *support them* but make use of them for the purpose of unique gameplay that is not possible otherwise.

Once people are able to have their hands in game, and walk (even in place) to move their characters, and there's gameplay that takes advantage of that (i.e., tons of stuff you can't do without 1:1 hand motion), people will be blown away and will instantly understand the appeal.

The problem with that is that there isn't a good way to even get that set up since all those input solutions are not really available/expensive etc.

A whole new ball game will be here when games can actually count on people having their hands in the game as well as a way to do locomotion without a controller.

For one thing, it lets gameplay design in terms of item interactions become very generalized.

E.g., instead of adding a molotov cocktail as a built-in type of weapon, you add rags, which burn, bottles which break, a filled/empty state to the bottles and a volume that spills out when they break, which can also be lit on fire.

The player can then literally grab up a bottle of alcohol or gasoline, stick a rag in it, light and throw it, and that gameplay will work *completely intuitively*.

But it will also simultaneously obviate the need to create e.g., just an empty bottle, just a gas can, a molotov cocktail etc. all as separate items with their own gameplay, since each of those things *generically* have their own gameplay interactions and can be combined in more complex ones as above if constructed properly.

That's really powerful, both for gameplay purposes as game developers, and also from the perspective of players, because it is *far* more intuitive and natural to grab things and manipulate them using your hands than to perform similar actions via proxy through a controller.

Hey Mr writing expert, there's no such word as "earlyness" and if you meant "earliness" you would still be using it in the wrong context. VR is far from 'early' it's at least 20 years late if anything. I think the phrase you wanted was 'Relative newness' or something that actually makes sense.

And you call me illiterate?

Thanks everyone for replying this post and please forgive my English as it's not my first language.

I have been emphasizing many times in this post that I am a big fan of VR so please don't treat me as a hater.

It's possible that I am too greedy. The ultimate goal of having the technology of virtual reality to me personally is to allow me to experience myself being in a place where I can't easily travel to (eg. Mars), or a situation which would never happen to me in reality (eg, fighting for the heavy weight boxing championship).

Like many of you guys have pointed out (eg. n00854180t), control should be one of the major missing elements of the current Oculus VR experience, which we have not heard from Oculus that they are working on it or acquiring another company which has the technology. Definitely they are not running out of money today.

But I want more, I am looking forward to a killing application, thanks nukemarine for asking me to give an example, but I really can't as if I could, I would not complain here but go ahead to develop it... maybe a software which allows me to talk to people who I miss, like face to face, I can touch them, hug them?? I don't know... just want something which will make me shout out or cry or run out to the street and tell everyone about it.

It sounds like I am complaining, but actually I am not and I have not given up.... and I wish discussions like this one, will drive everyone of us, big fans of VR, to be more innovative, to be more crazy, to be more out of the box, and hopefully the Oculus team will see this post and understand we have very high hope on them (and gift me a retail version of the rift when available)...

Oh, one more point I would like to make... I am sure I am not the only one who is not happy about what has been done so far for Oculus Rift, the Oculus team themselves are not happy too, and that's why it is taking them so long to launch the retail version. DK2 is better than DK1 a lot with no doubt, but I am sure the team is still not fully satisfied about it, and which is good.

The Oculus team want more from VR than we all do.

Lunar Flight, DCS, War Thunder, Titans of Space, RiftCoaster, Etc.

I haven't tried them personally with the Rift as I don't have mine yet, but I have run them all with conventional displays and the reviews are they are phenomenal in the Rift. Even non Rift they are standouts.

Besides, this is all just your, my, and other's opinions. Your opinion may matter to you but I disagree with you on this and I'm sure others do as well.

Maybe it's the language barrier but people shouldn't assume they know what others are thinking. It sounds like you are saying OVR isn't happy with the apps and software people are writing for the Rift? If so, how do you know that and especially how do you know that is causing them to delay CV1?

I think some people don't fully appreciate everything involved in getting a real product out the door. Just for starters there are regulatory approvals in a number of countries. You don't just wake up one day and decide to sell a high tech product worldwide the next. There is also not just design but design for manufacturing. Testing, revision, parts availability, logistics, scheduling, etc. You don't just do this stuff on a whim and millions of dollars - probably many tens of millions of dollars - will be gambled on it all coming together properly.

How long was Sony working on the PS4 before it hit shelves? According to Mark Cerny (lead architect) they started in 2008. In nice round years to the release date that's five years and many criticize the PS4 for not being that innovative. CV1 is much more tightly integrated with human factors design, uses cutting edge (and hard to get) screens,, may even use custom silicon and circuitry, etc. Pulling CV1 together in even three years would be good. Doing it in two? Great. In one? Amazing.

You must get your eyes checked! BTW, you are too arrogant to assume that WE have no killer apps on the rift. I think it is YOU who are too poor to buy a decent app and so you only brows the free share ones.

    Dear OP,

    What have you developed?
If the answer is, as I suspect, not a damn thing, then please explain why you have a DEV-kit.
