Promising Concept - To show or not to show ??? (Link inside)

EDIT : More Informations about our project here : viewtopic.php?f=29&t=6669

Hi guys !

So I am confronted to a very hard decision.

A dev friend and I have been working on a concept that we think could be a huge revolution in the VR and telepresence fields.

Since we are only students we only had few days to work on it during the last two months, but we already have a promising prototype and some contacts with a lab that might help us in bringing it a step further. We also have some people ready to invest a bit of money on the project, probably enough for a nice start.

Now the problem is that our concept is great because it's simple and pretty damn efficient. Anyone with some skills and money could steal it and do it. We like the idea of open sources projects but we would also like to open a business thanks to this new "technology".

We didn't want to talk about it at all before having a more advanced prototype and some work from the lab, but we are also really scared that someone out there might have the same idea and might show it to you before we do.

So what should we do ? Should we keep it for ourselves until it is advanced enough or should we decide to keep you informed at every step of the project even if it means showing it to people with more means than us ?

I've seen a demonstration from a company doing 3d telepresence where you have a polycom style machine that has a kinect type of camera built in for doing point cloud 3d capturing of people. The trick is getting the right display projection for each person. If everyone has a rift on then that's one way of doing it but I'm not sure people would accept that as a workable solution.

    This is what you want:

Waow it's amazing ! How did you guess ?

In fact it's a shapeshifting star trek sex robot. You can make it look like any girl from Star Trek, and also like Captain Picard. Of course our testers prefer Seven of Nine, T'Pol and Jadzia ;) .

Software that depends on an upcoming bit of hardware? Must admit, the only upcoming items that have me interested are the MYO from Thalmic Labs and the Emotive Insight, both of which I'm including in my final vr rig design. In many ways, I find the idea of keeping to secrecy a good policy for business, though I'd argue getting out there first with something that works well is more important right now is more important. The vr field is in its nascent stages so almost everything found can be very big and you never know if an idea has been brought out before you. Part of the reason my friend Avon and myself joined this forum is to identify the items being come up with on a regular basis. We even went so far as to release an overly long rig design doc just for the sake of getting an idea in the public's consciousness before there was enough time for a larger group to realize it. Still, it's a tough line to follow and it's in your hands to make sure your idea flourishes. Everyone's looking for their zone in vr right now so set your keep and try to be friendly to the locals, there is still much to be found. I await with anticipation that your idea helps raise the bar ever more. :D

    First rule:

    Copyright it.

I remember an idea I had in high school about using centrifugal force to artificially increase an electron's weight relative to it's mass. However, the equations I came up with kept saying that the electrons would rip apart and become something smaller. This was at the time when we all knew that electrons where the smallest possible unit.. So I thought my equations were wrong. Unfortunately, my physic's teacher had no freaking clue about theoretical physics

A few years later I had an idea to use a stream of light from a laser to send signals between 2 computers.. kind of like Morse-code...(this was in the era of 28.8 modems)

So nowadays, I'm stuck eating ramen noodles.. so, like I said.. copyright your ideas.
