Quest 3 was stuck on finding position in room and now stuck on black screen

Hi,

I powered on my quest 3 headset and was getting a message "finding position in room" continuously so I did a factory reset and I'm now only getting a black screen after startup with some background sound.

I can see the meta horizon label and hear the startup sound when booting but then it quickly goes to a purple and blueish gray picture before going black. I have no other menu available and I've factory reset 3 times. I see other board messages with similar problems so it starting to sounds like there is no fix yet?

Thank you!

Yup, I bought my Q3 at launch, support told me it's out of warranty so I'm *ship* out of luck. They then offered me to buy a refurbished one. Like "yeah you know how you know how we sold you a product brand new that won't last more than 1.5 years? How about buying another one but this time it's USED?!" What an abysmal disappointment. Sorry the same thing happened to you dude. Best we can do is share our story with others on reddit.

Same, this is the second time it is happened to me. First time, I had like 200$ on it. And all they did is just send me a new quest 3 like that somehow fixes the issue. And 3 DAYS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENDS. I’m actually crying this is so annoying I don’t know what I even did l

After a bit of research it appears to be one of the cameras that can go bad and this is the result .some people have managed to replace the broken camera and get them working again ..from the black screen of death ...seems to be if you drop it just the once it can damage cam and this is the result

For me this problem started appearing when the batteries on my controllers got a little low. I replaced them and no issues yet so far...

Thanks I tried that sadly it didn't solve it .I have now purchased a 2nd hand quest 3 from ebay for £181 a lot cheaper than the one meta was trying to sell me ..I appears after much research that the issue lies with the bottom cameras under the arms they seem to go bad and this it what causes the issue they can be purchased on amazon cheep but not easy to fit because have to basically take the whole.unit apart to get to them ..I will send my other unit to be fixed in the future to CEX in UK cost £79 for repair

king.mossop  this is good to know. I didn't think that CEX did VR repairs. Having said that, I've replaced cameras on Quest 2 and 3.

Fixmyoculus.com worked. The headset is now functioning properly as before. No idea which of the sensors they changed out though. In the end, since I purchased the headset using my Amazon Chase credit card which a has one year extended warranty benefit, the bank paid me the $160. If you're not using this card already, I can confirm it works as advertised: process was super simple and they extend out the warranty a full year past the manufacturer's warranty. Pretty awesome.

It's a front camera issue. See this thread

People are having the same issue, leaving their headset to die and recharge, and having it fixed. Please do not say such things with such confidence. Removing another camera and replacing it would likely have the same affect as having the headset fully turn off and clear idk, cmos or whatever.

My quest that sat for a month and was untouched by anything also had this issue. I don't think you could convince me this is hardware after seeing 2 immaculate headsets die with seemingly no reason. No drops, no sweat, no scuffs, just dead.

I have two headsets with the exact same issue now and the only connection is that they both sat idle plugged in for a month. This leads me to believe that a corrupt update happened twice. So if we could not tell people to send their headsets in for hundreds of dollars when it's clearly, to me, a meta fault, that would be great.

I never said people should send in their headset.

If you read my posts in detail, you would know that I went through a lot of diagnosis.

Initially, it seemed like a firmware issue, but after SUCCESSFULLY updating firmware 4-5X to latest, the problem was still there.

I personally swapped out the front with known working front (all cameras in front) and it worked normally.

As of yet, I do not know Specifically WHICH camera is the culprit in front. Ordered cameras and expecting this week.

I have taken my time to post in detail the symptoms. Will post a successful resolution when I have one.

Just trying to help, people can do what they want.

This exact same thing happened to me four times, no damage done to any of the cameras/sensors. Every time I go to Oculus support they just say "Oh, yeah we'll send you a new unit." I think I've done more troubleshooting than actually using the device. It happened to me today for the fifth time and this time I didn't factory reset it (like I did the first three times) and just went to Oculus support where they told me to factory reset the device even through I told them what would happen.

Somehow adjusting IPD wheel helped me to resolve "Finding room position" loop. I used to have Max setting, reduced it to 69-70, and issue is gone ( at least in my case ).

Happened to my son's quest 3S. I knew if i factory reset it, the screen would go black. Support told me to factory reset and sure enough the screen went black. Could hear sound and had a flash of purple like OP said but nothing else. I did manage to back everything up before it died. They are sending me a refurbished unit as this one was still under warranty and have credited me £25 quest cash for the inconvenience. I worry that it will happen again when it is out of warranty.

This thing is my sons world. He loves this thing and I cannot see him without it. There must be some sort of fix out there that sorts this issue out.

Any help would be appreciated if this happens again.

    Hi Ozzy0812 🙂

Does your son play games like Gorilla Tag or others that cause him to sweat?

This problem is caused by sweat getting into the headset. There are many posts on this topic.

You should consider purchasing a breathable interface for the Quest.
This prevents moisture/sweat from accumulating inside the face mask.

You might of hit the nail on the head there.

Yes he lives on Gorilla Tag and Animal Company and recently it has been very hot here in the UK and he does sweat quite a bit.

Thank you for the recommendation on the breathable interface

Same issue. Wish I knew about this before I bought it. I searched for common issues but didn't find anything so thought all was well. I've had mine for about 3 weeks, play 2-3 times per week for about an hour at a time. Bought new.

I deleted all of the boundary settings, set a new boundary (which got the headset tracking working again) but now the controllers track VERY poorly. My on-screen hands keep 'sticking' and I have to move them wildly around to unstick them, or they just float off as though they can't be seen.

Have removed the faceplate and reattached, cleaned all sensors and cameras, new batteries for the controller. No change.

    What is going on?!
