I got to try the Oculus Rift for the first time this week at a local IGDA meeting in Minneapolis. I wrote about my first experience and first impressions on my blog, but the experience was also very inspiring creatively.Obviously there are going to be many first-person games, in particular FPS games, for the Rift. But I think there's a lot of potential for other applications, and that's what excites me more. Think of being an eye floating above a 3d abstract puzzle game, whose environment you are a part of. Think of playing a 3d sidescrolling platformer, but instead of playing it on your TV, it is like you've moved inside of the screen and you now occupy the same space as the characters you control. You could watch a 3 inch tall Mario walking, running, and jumping his way through a model-sized game level laid out in front of you.Imagine yourself a few years in the future when the Rift has a resolution beyond the "Retina" display densities of today. Let's say resolution of the Rift h
Hey, so I registered on the forums right at the start and was posting lots of game design advice and ideas. Not long after that though I changed my name due to family reasons, now being called Louis Arrigoni, but I cant seem to find any way to change my user name on the forums as I'd rather be called LouisA - is this possible at all? Making a new account would mean not being able to have full forum access for a while and being deattatched from my other posts and stuff..
I was just thinking..Do you think the nausea we have when drinking to much, come from the visual latency involved by alcohol ? :o
This is the year folks. VR is finally going to pull the general public in. Start saving your coins because this year we are going to have some things to buy. I can't hardly wait. Salute!Michael Tenery (aka Calanar)
Sorry if my title is slightly misleading but that's what the movie claims! Right at the 0:50 mark  I am seriously pumped for this movie and anything that helps bring about the singularity!Plug me in!
So,it's been over a year now since we got a glimpse at what VR might bring us through our beloved Development Kit. We've been kept busy with a steady stream of tiny bits of information regarding what OculusVR is up to behind closed doors. However, when it comes to solid facts on the current state of development, official statements on current or future specs or tasty new images out of the development process and the latest HMD-creations there's hardly anything new brought to us backers, developers and straight enthusiasts. What I'm kindly asking you, Palmer, is wouldn't it be about time to pull down those panties and show us what you got in store right now? Maybe as a little Christmas present to the community? :D Kind regards,David
I've been contacted by a really small partnership company called pipelineshockstudios (http://pipelineshockstudios.com/)and they want me to join their company (how ever they're really small at the moment and they seem alright) but I want to join some bigger partners (but I've always heard, that you have to start off small in order to become a big deal) on YouTube. I'm trying really hard to get my YouTube channel off the ground and its doing really well (because the fact my channel is only 2 months old I have 24 subscribers and over 2800 views.)I blocked his name for safe reasons.Heres their message " Hey my name is T-------------- P----------, I am CEO of Pipeline Shock Studios. ive seen your videos and was wondering if you thought about joining a network? we are not like machinima who claims to be a Multi Channel Network. we on the other hand are a Online Video Network Studio. this is what makes us different then the others.1. no perpetual contracts!2. we always will keep our flat rat
Since the Oculus team have been demoing the 1080p version, I am wondering if they have plans to release these for pre-order?I on behalf of many others have hold-off on pre-ordering the Devkit 1.0 due to the reported screen door effect and that it is extremely less pronounced on the 1080p version. The increased resolution will ofcourse help the development of higher definition games that require you to read text of the User Interface (UI). Anything ranging from RPGs that have a hovering health bar and items of to the side, to first person shooters that have mini-maps hovering.Basically I am saying that for development of great UI I think the 1080p would be a godsend for developers.So... any ideas if they plan on releasing it for pre-order?
Tried oculus rift dev kit for first time yesterday and must say its quite the expereince. I was told it would cover your field of view which it did not. 1 inch black borders on all sides make me feel like i am wearing goggles. wider field of view would make it that much more immersive even without high end resolution. Will the consumer product cover our peripherals completely? Thats what im most worried about...
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-12-19/nsa-spying-blowback-continues-boeing-loses-brazil-jet-order4 billion is some serious cheese kidDies! That is deathstar level ballpark yes? Who was the marketing genius at oculus that thought having lonsdale and his prism/palantir connections on the steering committe was wise? (I know palmer he is a good guy and was so sick of evil NSA crap he left palantir 4 years ago). But palmer as u have proven w mine and your history - the truth don't matter - its what the masses believe - lie or not. Maybe Brazil decides oculus can't be sold there because of lonsdsle/palantir ties. He is just a nice guy after all. Besides even if he were still working w spooks. It is just to protect us from snowcrash. Thank u NSA for protecting me. Fugg those Brazilians who font know how much good u nsa do making the world safe from ravens. PS I just saw anchorman 2 lol!!! Give people hype and drama - they don't want real good useful stuff. Lol
Hi guys, just came across this: http://www.durovis.com/index.htmlLooks like a HMD built around an Android phone. Interesting concept, what do you think? Much less sophisticated than the Oculus Rift, yet potentially more portable and accessible for casual gamers.
http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/http://repo.steampowered.com/download/http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/648814395741989999/If Valve didn't lied that they would release SteamOS simultaneously with first Steam Box shippings, it should be available tomorrow.Generally, it's a Linux OS, with "special tweaks", exactly what is tweaked is not yet known. But we can already tell that it's not gonna support DirectX. Therefore, for developers it's gonna be a choice of either going with OpenGL and pals and develop for SteamOS, PS4,Windows, Linux and Mac, and if they go with DirectX they're stuck with XBone and Windows. Some engines may implement both, but honestly, what's the point - besides getting xBox controller to work easily.Either way, I'm expecting the OS to have a "game mode" which minimizes OS influence, possibly down to zero activity unless requested otherwise, which minimizes context switches and therefore improves performance. Another thing is
I want simply share this video with the community because is pretty much funny and original!Enjoy :Dhttp://www.videobash.com/video_show/aquatop-display-896872
Can someone suggest a good VR themed anime?I've already seen : Ghost in the Shell (movies and episodes)Denno Coil (thank you geekmaster)Sword Art Online.hack
One of the first things I thought of when I discovered the Oculus Rift was, "What if we put cameras on the front, routed the feed through some post processing software that puts an interactive HUD on top of the video, then routed it to the screen of the Rift?" Wouldn't that be pretty sweet? We could have semi-transparent applets in our vision that help us out with things. Like instead of looking at a 2D map for Google Maps, the camera's detect the road you are driving on, and then places the destination path on the road itself! Or you could have a virtual pet; not only would it be pretty cool to edit your pet to make it 1/3 cat, 1/3 dragon and 1/3 cyborg, but it would teach kids responsibility without risking the life of your deranged monster of the underworld. You could also have a TV app that assigns a virtual TV to a blank space on your wall... Or a non-blank space... Just like virtual reality, the possibilities are endless. Although there are lots of hurdles to jump over when de

Well I just got my oculus rift today. (and as soon as I plugged it in) I noticed it acts like a 3rd display/monitor.How ever its somewhat distorted (as a monitor) and you're not able to just use it as a display (which I so hope you can in the future) because it'd be great to use.Does anyone know how I can just use it as a display for my games? I don't care if I can look around or not (I'm just wanting to use my oculus rift like a normal monitor) because I'm getting really, really use to them. There are some games I'd like to play like Counter Strike Source, Slender : The arrival, Call of Duty Ghosts, and Crysis 3) ect. Does anyone know how this is possible? Like I said "I'm just wanting to use it as a display" it doesn't matter if I can look around in the world or not (which I don't do most of the time when I'm sitting down)
So, i got a scratch on one of my lenses. Fortunaltely it was not big enough to effect the gameplay (i can see it if i focus on it, but, its fine)So, that got me thinking, if somehow a lens gets damaged can i order replacement lenses anywhere? if i did break a lens while cleaning (or my wife does when putting it away) i'd be screwed with no way to get a new lens.Maybe this is covered someplace, figured I'd ask (and keep it off the main forums).thx
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/report-nsa-spying-virtual-worlds-online-games-21146712Ok who wants to come work for my friends at the pentagon playing deus ex online looking for spies! LOL! I turned in that german guy and that russian female They seemed fishy to me! Call me Denton....
I just decided to check whether or not my smartphone's display was AMOLED rather than LCD (because I tilted it around and figured that it has infinite viewing angle, and this particular phone has two revisions, one with LCD and one with AMOLED screens) by viewing it with the Rift cup, I picked a packaged cup off the Rift's boxcase, couldn't confirm or deny anything because the screen had RGB pattern (could've been direct hit if it had pentile pattern), applying big pressure to the screen didn't had any effect either, but probably because the matrix didn't received any of it, so I'll just keep thinking it's an LCD model because it doesn't have true blacks. Then I (just for the fun of it) checked my desktop monitor with the cup, it had ridiculous SDE although you can't ever spot it under normal circuimstances LOL.Then I was going to put the lens back where it belongs and suddenly......really? THAT was an A cup? The smallest cups are in the boxcase, what are the mounted cups, B cups?.. I
The Virtuix omni made it to the tv show "Shark Tank" where people take their ideas and show them off to the big investors, who've made millions, etc, doing entrepreneurial stuff. The Virtuix guys showed up and they asked for 2 million at 10% (valuing their company at 20 million). The guys were essentially laughed at because the overarching thing, was they didn't think people would actually use the omni on a consistent basis, for one, and 2, they think of gamers as fat, and lazy. What are your thoughts. Do you think that the stereotype the 'sharks' have of gamers is correct to any degree?See this link, here
I can't use the Oculus Rift (just as a display, it makes me motion sick "I keep thinking I can turn my head when I can't and it makes me really dizzy and my stomach starts acting up) I'm already to use to the headtracking. Are there any games that have head tracking? Here's what I'm aware of so far - MineCrift (Minecraft VR mod)- Cinema 3D - Team Fortress 2 - Alone in the Rift - Half life 2 (VorpX driver)- War Thunder- Private eye- iRacing There are about 5 other games I've heard of that has head tracking but I can't remember what they are.
I tried playing TF2 (and it worked just fine) how ever when I start up the movie cinema program or if I try launching mirrors edge with Vireio perception or portal 2 (the game can move around) but the display isn't going into my oculus rift. How can I get my oculus rift to display the game that's on my monitor? I'm new to the rift -_-Edit : Minecraft is doing the samething!
Watch this.http://oculus-rift.ru/Blah blah yadda yadda - $950 for preorder, $1500 for off-the-shelf. For a devkit. Oh my fucking god, really? OculusVR must seriously make it easier for international customers to order the Rift. Just see above numbers to get the magnitude of the problem.Oh and note that they claim to start open sellings in 36 days. Guess you know what that means.
I've been goggling trying to find a particular field of study, which name is alluding me. I'm trying to find research into body modifications. Altering the human body to do things it was either not intended to do, or an individual was not born with the predisposition for (such as hypermobility AKA double jointed). While I can find research into replacing bones with metal alloys I'm hoping to find an overarching field of study. On a second note a co-worker and I were talking and the question came up. "With all of the history of our world and medical science and this one important question that has loomed over every generation. How is it that no one has discovered how to 'honestly' increase a mans penis size" referring to surgical or otherwise. Lots of lies and speculations out there, but no definitive answer for an obvious popular field of study.I look forward to your answers (yup I know this is an odd place to ask, but this is the "off-topic" area :) )
